Stubble with De and shavette

I have been and DE guy for some years and feel comfortable with this.

My new girlfriend has a wish for me to keep some beard and to shave crisp lines on my cheek and neck.

I honosutly dont like the feel of a medium beard so my desire is to have either stubble with crisp lines or a full grown beard and then shave myself bald instead (much to SWMBO`s desbelief).
My problem is I think my DE`s are a poor tool for crisp lines as it is difficult to see the crisp lines beneath the shaving cream.

A store (proshave.dk) told me I either needed some high end beard trimmers or a shavette (i have one but am not confident with it).

I much prefer manual tools so my question is if there is some "manual" tool i can use to control the length of the stubble.
I assume it will be something different than an adjustable DE.
Perhaps a DE where the blade is liftet a bit up from the skin?

DE razors are fabulous at setting the edge of beard lines. If you want something manual to control the length of the stubble, this comes to mind:

A very mild DE may work, like negative blade exposure mild. When I want to give my face a rest I use my Blackland Era with level 2 plate and it leaves some stubble with a 2 pass (wtg/xtg) shave. I don’t know what other razors would be equally as mild or milder, but it may be worth a shot since you like DE’s.

How so?

When the face is lathered up?
Yep, lather the area you want to shave and start the razor on the edge of your beard and shave away from it, removing the stubble you want gone. Don’t lather the stubble you want to remain.

A single edge razor would work for etching.

It's easier to see where you are putting the blade down to get that etched look. And for etching it's not necessary to use shaving cream. Just wet the razor and you should be fine. Once the etching is done, than lather up and finish the shave.

For edging, a shavette is ideal but you can do it easily with a safety razor, especially if it has a slim head. If you're using a cream or a soap, lather like normal and then wipe off a fingertip width right along the beard line. There will still be a thin layer of soap there but you'll be able to see your work. I actually shave towards the beard, with a straight or a shavette it's much easier to see the edge of the blade in relation to the beard line than vice versa, and if you use a light touch the resistance at the beard will tell you when to stop.

For managing the stubble length, clippers with guards is by far the easiest to do yourself, plus with different guards you can experiment with different lengths. If you want a manual option, manual clippers like linked above work...or a comb and a pair of hair shears. But a comb and shears works better if someone else is doing the cutting.
