Strop in a pinch

I just received my 5/8 Dovo Best, shave ready.
Unfortunately I do not have a proper strop to use with it.

My question is, can i use a leather belt until I can get a proper strop?
There is a 15" spot on it that looks like it would do the trick, but as I'm new to SE my knowledge is lacking. The leather has been dyed black, and feels of ok quality.

Any comments would be welcome. Thank you in advance

Sure as long as its smooth. Newspaper or the back of a legal pad will work also.

I think I like the paper idea better, than the belt.
Just starting I haven't learned the X, and it would be very slow.

How many passes should I go on the paper?

newspaper works alright, but not nearly as well as a strop.

My Poor Man Strop Kit came in yesterday and so I will be using it.
