Stahley questions

Hello,
I just received a Stahley from ebay, and I'm not sure it works. I turn the bottom, and about every revolution it makes a clunking sound. I can get a very light vibration that lasts about 5 seconds if I turn it 10-20 times. If I pick it up the vibration is not noticeable (I notice it's moving at all if I put it on a table.

My impression was that the vibration should last about 3 minutes, and be noticeable. Is the "thunking" noise normal? Any quick fix I can try before sending it back?

Thanks,
Paul.

There are a few threads around here describing how to take apart and restore your Stahly. However, yours sounds like something is broken, but I'm no expert. I'd suggest returning it, or if you got it from eBay, contact the seller and he may at least give you a partial refund, if the listing said it was functional.

This is why I refused after the third time(yeah I know granite head) I pulled the trigger on a mint nos one. Just got tired of getting screwed. Buy it right the first time and save yourself some headache. Nice razors btw!!

I would tend to send it back and just get another one. The inner workings of the Stahly is not exactly for the faint of heart from the diagrams I've seen posted.

Don't send it back. Even if you get it working, the vibration is just a novelty and really doesn't add anything to the shave.

The best part of the Stahly razor is the head. Its a really neat little piece of engineering. You can use the razor without the vibration, or Take the head and put it on another 3-piece handle, either a custom like a Bull Mastiff or a standard production one, then go to town and marvel at how well this Frankenrazor shaves.

There is some logic to that, but I would say that all depends on how much you paid for it. If you spent a lot expecting a working handle then it is not worth keeping. If you spent $10 or less than I probably would just keep it. But I do find the vibration does add to the shave. Makes it feel like a hot knife cutting through butter!

Try an overnight soak in hot water and dishsoap. I bought a Stahly that refused to wind up at all. After an overnight soak, it was fine.

Some folks here have also used a hot oil soak of some kind, I think. If you feel especially brave, there is even a disassembly thread.

Here, mantic59 takes a look at the Stahly. This was the razor that was passed around in 2011, I was a member of the group. I think it was B&B member natchez that got the pass-around started, and it was sent to mantic at the end for him to make a film about it.
