SQ #1: How to see through hand?

Hello all,

Three straight shaves in and finally figured out why some of my accesses are really awkward.

In the standard, "shaving the right sideburn with your right hand, pulling over the top with your left hand" I can't see through my right hand.

Yes, I have my neck craned in the mirror, just can't visuallize that part of my face with my hand holding the razor to shave it. I'm a big guy with big hands and would need another 2" worth of razor/tang to get my hand far enough forward to be able to see the sideburn.

This early on in my straight career shaving it blind seems like a receipe for disaster.

Any suggetions? I'm tempted to try coming across with my left hand...

Other than that, I'm sporting a CCS seriously trending to DFS this morning.

More in the journal (when I post it),

Switch razor to left hand! I know it will be tough at first but it is a necessity.

since you are still in the early learning phase may as well learn the correct ways

Look through between thumb and forefinger. The razor tang will block part of that just look above or below.

Or ensure you've placed the blade properly, and trust yourself. I used the shave my entire face with carts in the shower without looking. I could probably do it with a DE. An inch or two isn't that big of a deal. I do it now, and don't think of it anymore. It used to bother me, and I got used to it. Just know where the tip of the blade is before you start, and make a clean pass till you can see.

You'll get used to it if you want to stay with one hand.

and there's a certain stunt shaver here who's done a full straight shave blindfolded. On a ship too if I recall properly.

I set the downward stroke up as best I can and hope for the best. If that's not so good, I fix it the next day. If that's not so good . . . [rinse, repeat]

Good morning all,

I tried looking between my fingers. No joy. Just ain't happening.

Set the stroke up as best as possible and "went for it." Then got what I could with visual accesses.

And then for the very top, near the hairline, I came across with my left hand and got it.

Perhaps unorthodox, but it worked.

No problems using my left hand, I'm mildly ambidextrous anyway, but favor right.

This morning was a two-pass WTG over my entire face.

Left cheek/sideburns were CCS. Right cheek/sideburns are SAS.
Neck is SAS. It really needs XTG and ATG passes to get neatened up.

People are discussing meditation in the Barber Shop. Stropping could meditative REALLY easily. Nice breath pattern, tight focus... Mmmm

I'll transcribe my formal journal sometime soon. This week has too many 14 hour days...
