Speick shaving soap stick

I bought a stick of Speick from a member on the boards and got it in yesterday, so I HAD to try it this morning. I read the tutorial last night since I had never used a soap stick before. At first, I thought I was doing something wrong because I had water dripping off my face and I wasn't getting the wet low level lather that the tutorial seemed to provide. My face was soaked and I even wet the stick a few times and it just smeared a sort of dry white haze on my face. Also, it wasn't slick feeling on my face during application. It pulled quite a bit.

I got my brush and shook out quite a bit of water and started brushing my face. In literally less than 10 seconds I had thick lather forming. I could have stopped and had thick, slick, beautiful lather to shave with but I kept on for a while longer. I had one of the best shaves of my life this morning. If I had known about this, I wouldn't have bought all the other creams and soaps I did (OK, I probably would have but this is at the top of my list now).

I also got the palmolive stick in this order and I would like to try it tomorrow, but I don't know if I can tear myself away from the Speick.

A couple of questions, though. How do you store your shaving sticks? Both of them came in the original box with the aluminum foil on them. Just throw them in a plastic food container like a soap?

Also, how do you pronounce Speick? Like spike or speck or something else?

Is there a difference in the 2 boxes of soap? I got the one without the horizontal blue lines on it. Just wondering if I got the better of the two.

Is there a brick and mortar store in the states that sells this anywhere?

Speick is great soap...glad you turned it into a super shave.

I use a 35mm film can as a stick cover. Others use a pill bottle.

I say "speak". I found a box of Speick at a German Deli but otherwise I have ordered from on-line vendors.

I got the Speick/Palmolive sticks a few weeks ago. If you like the Speick, wait'll you try the Palmolive. IMO the Palmolive is even better, though the Speick stick is no slouch.

Shave sticks that just have the plastic base or that just come in foil (Speick, Palmolive, Valobra, Wilkinson Sword, Arko) I mill into a bowl or mug and lather like a normal soap. Shave sticks that come in nice containers (D.R. Harris, Tabac, Irisch Moos, Mama Bears, Prairie Creations) I'll leave as a stick as they are good for travel. A lot of guys use an empty prescription bottle to store a shave stick. I believe it's pronounced shpike.

Thanks, guys. I have an empty pill bottle that I use for a travel brush holder. I guess I'll just get another of those.

IMO besides the slightly different light soapy smells of each, the lather and shave was identical from Speick, Palmolive and Wilkinson Sword (the blue shave stick).

All 3 were great, I just slightly preferred the smell of Palmolive over Speick and Wilkinson. If they ever manage to bring the Speick cream or aftershave scent to the shave stick I would buy 100 of them :thumbup1:

If you were expecting the lather to show up that early, you must have misread the tutorial, probably in your excitement to try Speick. Your description is exactly how Speick works in practice. Even with your face wet and the tip of the stick moistened, it does pull a bit. Just keep dipping it in water if it pulls too much.

I'm sure you found that the lather is excellent, much creamier than Joel's pictures in the tutorial--I think he was using a glycerin-based stick.

If you find that for some reason your brush isn't loaded with enough lather for your usual number of passes, you can soap up a little more between passes and re-lather. Works great.

Just bought a stick today. I was surprised at how small they are. Soap seems dense though and the scent is very warm and intoxicating. I got mine from Alpine Village in Torrance. Elenore is this very sweet German lady who owns the shop and she is very accommodating to acquisition disorder  She let me smell and try everything. I got to sample Hattrics, Irisch Moos, Tabac0 4711, and Speick before making a purchase decision. People in Los Angeles area should check her out. Anyway, this stuff smells really good. I bought the shave stick (milled it into a bowl) and also the AS. Excited to shave tomorrow morning

I realize what you're saying now. I think that's why it didn't look like the tutorial. I did have more than enough lather for my 3 pass shave. Could have a least done another pass or 2.

Speick would pretty much be at the top of my heap if they made a puck as well as a stick. The stick works best on me if I have a two-day beard. On a one day beard it's hard to make as much lather as I want. I go back and re-apply between shaves but I'd rather not have to, and wouldn't if it were a puck.

The other thing is I really like a fairly strongly scented shave soap, and this isn't it for me. I haven't tried their AS or other products, and the stick's scent pretty much eludes me.

Having said all that, what slick, protective lather! Gives me outstanding shaves.

Regarding the pill bottle trick for storing the Speick stick...I don't suppose anyone has a pic of how this works/is supposed to look?

I mean, do you just jam it in there or something? If this is the case, what does one do after you have used all of the stick that is sticking out?
I'm not a very practically minded person, sorry.:blushing:

Also, I seem to be only able to get a thin, weasely lather on my face from the stick. The more I rub my face with the brush, the thinner the lather seems to get. I'm sure this is the opposite of what is supposed to be happening....

You're not getting enough product on your face. Dip the tip of the stick in hot water helps too. Just keep rubbing the stick in to your stubble. More product is the key. Once you get the hang of it it's the most foolproof way to get a really good lather.

Yes, resist the urge to mill it down- that would be a travesty:001_smile I just took off the foil and keep it in the original box. Ziplock would work good, too

Speick is a wonderful Shave Stick but sadly, when I was shopping in Germany yesterday I was unable to find any on the shelves. :mad3: I did pick up a couple of other staples, but I seem to PIF sticks as fast as they make them and I am almost out of Speick......

If your Speick stick doesn't fit in your pill bottle, you may need to aquire a larger pill bottle. They will sell them to you (or probably just give you one) at your local pharmacy if you ask.

I keep my Spieck in a pill bottle, but wish there were a more elegant solution.

LaToja is the only brand I know of that makes their own cover for the stick ... but it seems to be a bit fragile and flimsy and I don't expect it to last as long as the soap does. And I'm so OCD about branding that the thought of putting a Spieck/Palmolive/Erasmic/other shave stick in a LaToja container just makes my skin crawl.

I'd like to see one of B&B's resident artisans come up with a design for a nice looking, refillable shave-stick container. It could be made out of bakelite or resin, or almost any material that can be worked on a lathe. Since all shave-stick refills seem to be the same dimensions, it would be easy to make it a one-size-fits-all product.
