Some NEW Deluxe Goodness

Since I have fallen in love with my New Deluxe Norfolk, I decided to bid on a New Deluxe Big Boy the other day.

It just came in and wow- these things are stunningly handsome. It looks about identical to the one that sold recently on the BST. If the case wasn't in such nice condition, I would suspect a re-plate...but it has that bluish colored tint of the chromium New Deluxe razors I've seen on here before. Especially noticeable beside a nickel plated Bull Mastiff.

It also has the small hairline at the top of the barrel above the knurling like the razor just sold on BST. Guess the Deluxe didn't escape that pesky Gillette propensity for cracked handles evident on many of their razors from that era.

Other than that, just a really nice looking razor.

Heft is nice, a tad lighter than a Bull Mastiff with New head but still a nice weight and length. (On my Postal Scale my Bull Mastiff weighs 112 grams, the Norfolk/Tuckaway New Deluxe is 66 grams and the New Deluxe Big Boy is a relatively modest 84 grams.)

Usually the hairline cracked handles bug me a lot, but maybe I can live with it on this one.

Wow! That's a beautiful razor.

Worrying about the hairline crack on that razor is kind of like saying you would go out with Bar Rafaeli were it not for a 4 mm mole just under her left shoulder blade. C'mon! Give it a rest.

I love how clean that New is under the head. Most Gillettes look cluttered and scaffold like, but this one is sleek and elegant. Very nice.

Does anyone know what year this was produced? I was going to check an inflation calculator since depending on it's year, the $7.50 original price could be a tidy sum.

I ended up with that chrome big boy,it's on it's way to me now..I am not going to sweat the hairline crack either, but I can't help but wonder if there is any method of filling the crack with liquid steel or some other stabilizer to keep the crack from spreading..once it is in the crack, the excess could be wiped off and leveled out..it should not look better or worse, but should halt further cracking...any thoughts or experiences ??

Thanks, guys.

No Kroman blades, just nine Blue Blades in the Blade holder.

As far a as replating, yeah the chromium seems to have help up really well. The checkering is so sharp, it really makes you a believer. I've had replated razors before, and the handles can be a little slick. The plating can't put back metal that is worn down after all. This thing just seems pretty much NOS except for the crack.

I've read some threads on here about stabilizing cracks, but haven't tried it.

The NEW De Luxe with serial number like this one are produced from Oct.16.1930 to Feb.1931. In 1935/36 the NEW DeLuxe don´t have a serial number
