Sodium lauryl/laureth sulfate & scalpal dermititis

I just wanted to make a post here in case any of the members suffer from the same scalp condition I have experienced for the last 16-17 years.

Ever since I was a late teenager, I have had chronic seborrheic dermatitis on my scalp. This included yellow plaque build up, constant itching and irritation, sores, excessive oil, and never ending skin flaking.

I have been washing my hair twice a day for at least 10 years with pyrithione zinc shampoos, as it was the only way to get temporary relief from the constant, and often times painful, scalp condition.

It has basically been the bane of my existence.

A couple months back I had an exchange with another member here that included a sample packet of Tact Olive Oil Shampoo (I can't remember who sent it to me, but THANK YOU!). I had dismissed it originally, and it sat on the top of my shower door sill for a while... one day (last Thursday to be exact) I reached up to grab some soap, noticed the packet, and thought what the heck? I washed my hair with it and let it sit for a few minutes... same as I always do with my dandruff shampoo.

It lathered well enough, and my hair seemed clean afterward... as I was combing my hair I noticed that my scalp seemed to have calmed down and felt sort of normal. I didn't think much of it and went to bed, when I woke up I realized that my head hadn't returned to its over oily state that usually occurs over night, and that my head for some reason didn't itch.

I decided to use the sample again in the morning, went to work and realized that I hadn't the slightest inkling to itch or scratch... by the end of the day, I realized not only did my head not itch, it wasn't nearly as oily as it usually is by that time.

Long story short, I read the ingredients and saw that the Tact shampoo didn't contain any Sodium Lauryl/Laureth Sulfate. I did some googling and found that it is a skin irritant to many people (as well as surfectant and degreaser). I tried to get the shampoo in stores, but it is only available online. So, I started looking for other similar shampoos I could get locally, as I did not want to go back to my Neutrogena Daily T-GEL. I found that Kiss My Face also had a similar type of shampoo at Target and Whole Foods. It was cheap and decided to pick up the shampoo and conditioner.

I have been using it for over a week and the seborrheic dermatitis has not returned, my scalp feels like it did when I was a kid... no more redness, irritation, itching or flaking... it truly is nothing short of miraculous, and I am still having a hard time accepting it. I feel like the second I post this I will jinx myself and it will come back :blushing:

It makes sense to me. I have a family history of allergies. And, although I tried every shampoo that claimed to be gentle, natural, anti-dandruff, salon, etc... I am 99.9% positive they ALL had SLS.

So, if you have suffered from this like I have, it can't hurt one bit to give an SLS-free shampoo a try... and, I hope you have the same results that I have had.

All the best!

EDIT: I just wanted to add that I have seen several dermatologists over the years for this, and none had mentioned the possibility of SLS as an irritant. And, all the suggested shampoo remedies (e.g., Nizoral, T-GEL) have SLS in them.

EDIT 2: Also, the yellow, crusty, flaky things that I started getting in my ears the last few years have disappeared as well.

EDIT 3: I went through all the bath products in our house... SLS was in all of them (pump soaps, shampoos, toothpaste)... basically anything that foams.

Nasty stuff. I have trouble with toothpaste. Make me gag something fierce. Tried all kinds. After reading about SLS here, I finally got Tom's of Maine SLS-free toothpaste. Now I only gag like a normal person.

Yup... I was reading that many people who suffer from chronic canker sores get relief by switching to an SLS-free toothpaste.

I don't use any products with sulfates - skin cleansers, shampoos or toothpaste. I am extraordinarily sensitive (I still cry when I think about the ending to Titanic, kidding) and sulfates really irritate me. Everything has improved since I stopped using them.

Excellent to know! I am gonna go SLS-free myself... I stopped using face and body washes and am now using only KMF Olive and Aloe bar soap... the dermatitis on my face has gone away as well, especially in the creases by my nose.

Amazing how some people are completely unaffected by things, and others have severe reactions... YMMV goes beyond shaving :001_smile

I thought I was the only nut that gagged while brushing teeth. It doesn't happen all the time.

How did you come about the realization regarding sulfates?

I am still a bit in disbelief at how much of a difference there has been... and one hand I am ecstatic that I may have found the source of my problems, but still kinda bummed it took this long to figure it out... and only by chance. I was resigned to the fact that I would have to deal with it for life and had not been seeking out any other remedy.

I found the same thing to be true for me: bad dandruff and an itchy scalp for years, but since I started making and using my own shampoo bars my hair and scalp are completely normal. It seems crazy that no dermatologist ever suggested that I should stop using sulfates, but none of them ever did.

Congratulations on your new lifestyle! :thumbup1:

SlS is everywhere including some commercial shave soap bases.

You may find your skin will improve over time after ditching the bath bars and washes with it.

How did you come about the realization regarding sulfates?

I'm not sure if this question is directed at me or not, but I'm going to answer it.

I've always had skin problems and have used, what seems to me, to be virtually every cleanser in your local pharmacy. I noticed that products for sensitive skin were sometimes irritating my skin more than those that were supposed to be "deep cleaning," or "penetrating."

I believe I ran some sort of a Google search and came up with something about how Sodium Lauryl Sulfate is tested on rats and blah, blah, blah. I thought, "Well, I've tried everything else, I might as well back off products with SLS and SLES for a while." Sure enough, my skin improved. I then switched off of sulfate shampoos and my hair improved. Finally, I decided to go all the way and bought some sulfate free tooth paste.

My skin is not wonderful now. I'm not going to win any awards or anything, but it's dramatically better than it was when I used cleansers with sulfates. Every now and then, I break out the Cetaphil and see how it goes; and it never goes well. It goes back in the closet is how it goes.

What you said about the discrepancy between what irritates some and doesn't irritate others amuses me, as well. I look at all the positive reviews on drugstore.com for skin care products that ripped my face to shreds and I shake my fist at my sensitive genes.

I just wish I had known about my sulfate sensitivity years ago. It would have saved me a lot of stress.

Just in case it helps anyone else, I now use the following:

Purpose Gentle Cleansing Bar (this is for my face)
Dove Sensitive bar (this is for my body)
Naked Naturals Shampoo: Avocado and Shea Butter (this is becoming increasingly difficult to find)
Tom's of Maine sulfate free toothpaste - fennel flavored. It tastes like black licorice, which I love. The lime is also very good, but I can't seem to find it at Whole Foods, anymore.

Awesome. Thanks for the info. It seems when I would looked up remedies they would always point to some medicated shampoo and never to any specific ingredient that could cause the condition.

I'm keeping my fingers crossed. :w00t:

After quite a bit of Googling I was able to locate the ingredient list for that shampoo, and discovered it contains a bunch of what apparently are considered 'milder' surfactants. What I think happened was that SLS simply worked too well in your case. Personally I am a bit (make that rather) shocked that none of the dermatologists were able to point you to a shampoo with a rather different makeup; this should be bread-and-butter stuff for them. Hell, it's the first thing which enters my mind! I admit it helps I'm a chemical engineer, but still.

Given that the symptomps have vanished so quickly, I think it's pretty safe to say you've nailed the cause. The scientist in me would suggest the following experiment to make sure: continue using Tact for a few weeks, then switch back to a SLS-containing shampoo again. I admit it requires a masochistical streak, but if you can bring back the dermatitis 'upon command', you'll have nailed it for sure.

As far as tootpastes go I used to notice that I never had good sleeps using of the shelp brands. Something in them played with my nerves maybe and I never had that settle feeling. I used to notice if I missed a night brushing I slept great and woke up settled, not jumpy. I started using Miessence and a Auromere - ayurvedic toothpaste and have been feeling better.

Too many chemicals in our products these days and business is making em cheaper and charging us more.

The natural products cost a bit more but are better for ya with better ingredients.

I stopped using of the shelf deodorant, shampoo/condish and toothpaste and can feel the difference.

I thought about doing this, but I don't think I can bring myself to do it.:001_07:

My biggest worry is that I will build up an intolerance to these milder surfactants as well. But, I think I need to just enjoy the relief for however long it lasts.

And, I agree, I am shocked that none of the dermatologists I saw mentioned the possibility... seems that is the exact reason you go to see one.

Very interesting, I will look into that toothpaste.

On that toothpaste note, my dad suffers from regular and severe allergic reactions to his face... particularly his upper lips and tongue, they swell up like balloons. I told him about the changes I have noticed on my scalp and suggested maybe he try a toothpaste without SLS... It can't hurt and it's a super inexpensive experiment to try.

About 5 years ago, I switched from SLS-based shampoo to a shampoo (trader joe's Nourish) that uses Olefin Sulfonate, which apparently is a much safer sulfecant. I was nearly bald at 25. Since switching from SLS-based shampoos, I have not experienced any additional noticeable hair loss. I'm sure I'll eventually be completely bald, but I do think that i would have had a full head of hair for a lot longer, had I never used SLS in the first place.

I've been additive-free (as much as possible, anyway) for years.

Check out iherb.com I've been impressed them and routinely order from them.
They have a great selection, competitive prices and ship internationally.
You can search by product, brand or even symptom and their product reviews are helpful.

Jason and Aubrey Organics offer great bang for the buck shampoos without SLS.

Be prepared to spend a lot of time on that site though.

Thanks for all the replies... glad to hear many of you experienced similar relief. Also, thanks for all the great product suggestions. It's good to know I am not limited to the just what is available in the big chain stores.
