Soap Purchase: Vintage Penhaligons Tallow vs MdC

I have roughly $60 to spend on a new soap. Vintage Penhaligon Tallow or MdC?

I can't vote because I haven't tried the Pens (although I do own a puck of the tallow). I haven't used it b/c I don't want to love it that much and then realize I only own one puck. I will be attempting to buy a puck of Pen's b/c I have plenty of MdC and just the one of EF. So if you're like me and can't afford two pucks then go the MdC route. MdC is the best soap currently in production.

I've never used either but I would go with the Penhaligons. It might be your only chance to try it. Also, the price of the MdC made me choke. It's the first shave soap that I just can't imagine buying due to price.

My vote would have to be for MdC.

It's hard to imagine anything outperforming it, and I wouldn't want to chance falling in love with something no longer available.

I've only tried MdC, so I can't vote..... but I would imagine MdC is going to win the poll because it is still available and has not been discontinued.

I've tried the vintage Pen's (I think the one that Phil will be stocking soon, not that I'm checking every 10 seconds!) and MdC and quite honestly...both! They both have different characteristics, but also very similar in performance. I find that the MdC is more "slick" while the Pen's is more "creamy." Also, I usually soak the Pen's puck (I put it at the bottom of a large coffee mug and soak it and my brush), while you don't have to with MdC. MdC is probably more "user friendly" and more ready to go out of the box, but they are both great. Obviously their scents are very different; MdC has that unique lavender/rosemary/mint/camphor scent, so it does smell somewhat like Noxzema (but in a great way) and Pen's English Fern or Blenheim Bouquet have their own signature scent. But that's just a preference choice; it doesn't affect the shave itself.

I've been fighting the urge to snatch up as much Pen's pucks that Phil will make available, but I think he's doing this the right way by limiting it so that people who have never tried them can get them. If you're genuinely curious, I would get the Pen's because MdC will pretty much always be available.

I would take the vintage Pens in a heartbeat. Not even close.

I don't understand this thought process "don't want to fall in love with something I can't get anymore." It's already true that you can't get it. My thought process would be, "I'm glad I get to enjoy this even though it's no longer available."

In other words, the fact that it's no longer in production is a plus, not a minus, when it comes to enjoyment of the soap. IMO.

Buy the Pens, if you don't like it, sell it and buy the MdC. You won't be able to do it the other way around.

Vintage Pen's, what else?? You can buy the MdC every day if you wanted, but the Pen's is "extinct".

You do realize the Pens is going to be $55/100g puck right?

I can't say either way, as I have never tried Pens soaps, but you probably can't make a wrong choice.

Yes, absolutely, what Rudy says. I have & use both - and I prefer the MdC by a hair (*sorry*) - but you might never see the Pen's again - gotta go for it!

Never tied Pens but worth a shot just for curiosity. Like I did with Old spice. Worth it? I'll go with Mike for perfomance and price but this Pens is a legend unto itself. The white unicorn coming into town for one last time. Possibly our lifetime.

Why buy something, discover it is the best stuff you have ever put on your face, and then not be able to get anymore when it runs out? Had to go with the MdC for that reason alone.

Every time I see a thread like this, I feel like a fool for selling my tallow-first English Fern and tallow-fifth Blenheim Bouquet :blushing:
