Slim v. Fatboy

I'm cruising ebay for my first adjustable. Other than the obvious physical differences, how do the Slim and Fatboy compare? Any love for the Super Adjustable? Maybe something else I should consider?

Thanks for the wisdom of your experience.

All three are wonderful in my opinion. An adjustable Gillette is an adjustable Gillette. It just depends on your preference IN their physical differences.

Do you want a thicker handle for more grip? Go FatBoy.
Do you want less of a handle to eliminate how big it is in your hand? Go Slim or Black Beauty/Super Adjustable

Some Super Adjustables also have longer handles as well.

It's all about what FEELS the best to you.

The Fatboy is more of an iconic razor. It kinda personifies the 50's whereas the Slim is a bit more streamlined with a lower profile head. The Fatboy has heft but the Slim is sleek. As much as I love both I'd say that the Slim is the better of the two (lower profile head, better balance). I can't part with my main Fatboy though.

Both are excellent shavers. I have both and prefer the Fat Boy because I like a razor more on the heavier side.

The head of the Slim has a lower profile and provides more ease in shaving under the nose.

You won't know which is for you, until you try both.

As for me, I prefer the Slim, but both are excellent razors and I'm happy to have both in my den (2 FB's and 4 Slims, 1 Super Adjustable)

i like the fatboy on a 5, i just got a slim today so will need to compare the two on the 5,i thought the slim would be a bit lighter weight than the fatboy, the two feel about the same weight to me.

I only have a Slim, which is currently my absolute favorite razor. I do remember reading a post or two that some guys find the lower profile of the Slim head compared to the Fatboy makes shaving below the nose a little easier. I can say that it's much easier for me to shave that area with my Slim than with my EJ DE89 or Merkur 34c, and that I love the balance of the Slim.

I shaved with FB for awhile & then got the Slim - only Slim now , smaller head profile & longer thinner handle as has already been mentioned - I would recommend trying one exclusively for a few weeks & then switch to the other - if you switch every other day, I don't think the differences will jump out -- my opinion

I will say this. They all shave very similarly (IMO), especially the Slim and its older brother, the 195 Adjustable. Those two are matched, from my viewpoint, when it comes to setting the closeness level desired. I use "7" for them. The black coating on the SA razors may offer a slight advantage if / when you get soap on your fingers. It seems that way for me. The SA that I have is "one notch" less close, in that for the same quality shave, I must use the "8" setting.

You need to try both. Some prefer the Slim, some the Fatboy but I think most will agree that they are both excellent razors.

I don't have experience with the super-adjustable but have 'heard' that it is milder than either of the other 2...

Fatboy = muscle car, just powers right through heavy beards
Slim = sports car, good maneuverability around tight corners

I ended up buying two fatboy and two slims to try out. After months of testing all different types of blades and settings, I've come to the conclusion that the fatboy is not suited for my face. No matter what I tried I could never get a good shave without irritation. I always get a great shave from both of my slims. I would suggest trying them both. Now I have two slims I want to get re-plated and two fatboys I want to sale.

Like "regularfella" I also have all 3 and would rank them exactly the same in terms of shave quality. If you are just starting out, the Super Adjustable on "1" is milder than either the slim or fatboy on their lowest setting. If you are on a budget, the slims can usually be found for less money than the other two. As you can tell from the other posts here, it is very much a YMMV type of thing. At the moment I am using my short handle Super Adjustable the most.

+1 to this, I thought my Fatboy would be heavier (got the Slim first), but was surprised to find that they weigh just about the same.

They're both outstanding razors with a huge fanbase. I think we can all say confidently that whichever way you go, Fatboy or Slim, that you will be happy with your decision.

The Fatboy is about 1/2 ounce heavier than the Slim.
