slant or open comb VS 5 day beard

Which one would be better performer versus 5 day beard? I have never used open comb nor slant, so lately considering to acquire one of them just to satisfy my curiosity.
(for every other day shaving I'm settled with R89 and Gillette rocket)

The open comb for sure. The slant is a rather aggressive razor but has the same issues with long hairs as any other safety bar razor. Any OC, mild or aggressive, will not clog up and will take a full beard down. Which is exactly what I do with it once a year!

FYI, the Gillette open combs are better for this than the Merkurs. While they are open-combed, I found them to be pretty mild razors. If you are limiting the purchase decision to Merkurs, then I would recommend the Slant. A vintage Gillette, like a New Standard, is a different story.

Excellent, thank you gentlemen for sharing your experiences. Open comb then.. So it shall be. Now only to decide which one, would 11c be a good choice? Or:
Also, I have found a rather interesting OC razor on ebay, but without info on manufacturer:

It looks to me that the head is identical to those early Muhle r89 open comb..
It does look like a R89 open comb head. Here is a link to someone that sold an R89 and it looks pretty close to me.

Well, I'm not limited to Merkurs, its just that they are easier available to me.. of course if I would bump on some Gillette New in e.g. antique shop, I wouldn't hesitate to pick it up. Au contraire..

i can't actually remember how i got my old type, but it was either from a pif or bought here on the b/s/t for <$20. prices on some vintage razors tend to run high for a pristine piece, but if you look for what would be considered "shaver grade" or "user grade" then the price point comes down drastically. post a wanted to buy ad in the b/s/t for a user grade old type open comb and see what happens. i would sell you mine but i like it too much. :001_tt2:

If you don't sell it, you never gonna know how much you love it :001_tongu

I was thinking of b/s/t, that is also an option, but most of the sellers are not willing to ship to Europe :001_unsur
Besides, I haven't decided yet which one to purchase..

I believe the old open comb R89 was actually an Italian Fat Tip razor. The replacement for that razor is the R41.

You are all spot on. The link shows a Fatip aka old Mühle R89. This is the most aggressive fixed DE I encountered, though manageable as long as you show proper respect. It is indeed replaced by the new R41 which has a Merkur OC head that is, as someone stated, rather mild. Still a far better option to remove longer hairs than the slant for me; it is the open comb that makes it work, not how aggressive it is.
