What's new

Show us your cheap finishing hones!

I've mentioned a few times on here that I am cheap. I've never bought a razor for more than 35 bucks (but I'm closing in on the 3 dozen straight razor mark...go figure), I'm a proponent of GD's, and I have a deal with myself that until this box of a dozen Arko sticks is gone, I'm not buying another shave soap/cream/lather product...I have many sticks to go!

Anyway, we all know how easy it is to spend a gajillion dollars on hones. What I want with this thread is to show folks that you can get a perfectly fine edge on solid (not film, sorry) finishers that you paid less than 3 dollars per square inch and / or less than 40 bucks that you can comfortably go from rock to strop to shave (no pastes/powders/etc). If you picked up a massive JNAT for 4 dollars at a garage sale, it counts.

I'll start it off with this one...bought this Belgian Blue Whetstone retail awhile back. This evening it's matched with a self-rescaled PIF-received Joseph Rodgers blade in zircote. I have three more rocks that match the requirements rather handily, so I'll at least post those over the next few days/weeks when I get a chance.

I also have a few options that came in at or under the $40 price-point. I'll just post this one though, an LPB bout...

I picked the green looking coticule and the purple Welsh stone from AJ last year, think it was about £30 for the two of them. My LPB slurry stone turned out to be a decent finisher too, and the little boxed hone was an ebay gamble about £10 which I think is a Llynn Idwal and gives a nice finish. I've got a Chinese 12k 6x2 which was cheap and does the job but I can't find a pic of it atm.

Here's another one...C12K / PHIG / CHUG from that ebay seller guy in Poland "open_razor". He treated me great, so props to him and his service.

These can be frowned-upon at times as being cheap / not "cool" / too slow / inconsistent rock-to-rock / whatever, but at least this one does a great job at keeping my razors in good order (plus it's the prettiest one I've ever seen! ). I like to put a little dab of hand soap at the far end of the hone's face so that as I keep it wet, a tiny bit of the soap gets incorporated into the water. Works great after the regular "water stage". I could use just this one maintenance hone for the rest of my life and not be disappointed in the results. Perfectly fine hone for me.

I'm sorry, but I'm a big fan of pastes. Mueller's water grindstone, followed by T-I alox/diamond and crox is the simplest cheapo ticket as far as I'm concerned.

I just picked up this stone determined to be a thuringian...I've never had one in hand, but the prevailing opinion is it's a thuri.

I picked it up with a lot of razors and a barber's hone. The seller threw it in as a "freebie" but if it takes full share with the other razors and hone I got that day, then $2.

Nice score, but your pictures aren't showing up.
