What's new

Should I be ashamed to admit this?

Of the software that I've collected, I really like my Godrej puck and a tube of Erasmic. Both are...shall we politely say...on the affordable side.

What other cheap creams (or soaps) are out there where the value exceeds their low cost? And where can I get them?

Van der Hagen soaps are widely available at Walgreens, CVS, and other drugstores and grocers, easy to lather, and generally considered a very good value for money.

I'm more of a soap guy, and one of my favorite is La Toja. Excellent soap and super easy to lather with hard water (which is a constant challenge for me). I think Joe at Italian Barber has it on sale right now for $5 and at that price it can't be beat. Others swear by Arko, which is an excellent value, but La Toja wins out in my book.

Check out Nuka (pronounced Pika) $2.99
Arko (on my list to try) Plenty love it, plenty hate it $1.99
Herbs of Bulgaria $4.99
Rose of Bulgaria $5.99
La Toja $4.89

Shaveabuck has these. I've tried them all except the Arko and can say that they are very good value, I was really surprised using Nuka.

Hope that helps,

Shave sticks generally are outstanding value for the money, I find the formulations comparable to top quality soaps in a bowl. My favorites are Speick, Palmolive, and La Toja, which are all quite cheap particularly for how long they last. RazoRock cream-soaps are also affordable and have outstanding performance.

There is no shame in my mind to wanting a shaving cream or soap at a reasonable price.

I'd say Stirling - soaps (croaps?) are around $6-7. Ordering more currently. Plus, I really like his extra-wide tins for lathering on the puck.

For creams, Kiss My Face?

Real Shaving Company Moisturizing Shave Cream at Rite Aid drug stores, $4.99 or so for 150 ml. The smell's not for everyone apparently, but I like it. It was an nearly daily cream for me for quite a while before I decided I liked soaps better.

Don't let the price deceive you into believing inexpensive = more value, though some soaps are priced higher, they usually are harder, need less load time and provide more shaves per gram than soft or glycerin soaps.

Tabac &D.R. Harris are harder soaps in the $14-$16 range for the Refill puck, are easy to lather and perform very well. Both will easily out last Soft & Glycerin based soaps and are cheaper on a cost per shave basis. When I exclusively used Tabac, a puck would easily last 8-10 months when shaving an average of 5 days per week.

That $16 refill worked out to $2.00 a month @8 months, and $1.60 if I got 10 months use.

Add; A very good SC I've just found thanks to B&B is Biotique Palmyra Shaving Cream 180g, it now comes in a Green Tub @ $9.11 shipped http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B004I90MRK/ref=oh_details_o03_s00_i00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

Here's the Thread that spurred me to try this http://badgerandblade.com/vb/showthread.php/332691-Biotique-Bio-Palmyra-amazing

Lea shaving cream in the tube, and even more so their shave stick is a great value. The cream smells a lot like Nivea and makes a great lather, comes in a generous 150 ml size. The shave sticks are a little higher than their direct competition most places I find them, but last a bit longer too.

+1. Also, if you like the Erasmic cream, you should try their shave stick.

I love all the suggestions, everybody. And I'm glad to hear Tabac lasts forever, as I don't mind spending a bit for a great product that I can get a lot of use out of. Keep them coming, as I'm making a list. :)

I really like Kiss My Face products. They are super slippery and have a lot of herbs and natural oils like shea butter to reduce irritation. Its like 6 bucks for a huge tube with a handy pump. Leaves my face feeling moisturized.

Proraso isn't exactly cheap, but for a little over 10 bucks a tube you do get quite a bit. I like it but I think it has a less slip than the KMF and it doesn't leave my face feeling moisturized. I do prefer the smell of proraso/bigelow to the smell of the KMF mint though.

Ogallala's new soap formula is pretty nice. Only 5 bucks for a puck iirc. Doesn't seem like it lasts very long though. As MFtoms59 pointed out, more expensive hard soaps will last longer.

Lots of good soaps and creams out there for cheap. I think everyone should try williams at least once. That way when the civil war breaks out over whether it is a good soap or not, you know where you stand.

J.M. Fraser's Shaving Cream has to be about the best bang for your buck, with a 16 oz tub (yes, 16 oz.!) running $14 - $16, and producing a wonderfully rich lather. It would take someone a year or two to use a 16 oz tub.

I haven't tried the Godrej pucks but I love the Godrej cream, especially the red tube. Last time I stocked up it was less than a buck a tube in Dubai.

VDH is another favorite of mine, partly because it is available everywhere, partly because it is cheap as dirt, and partly because it is just a good soap. Fourth soap I ever tried, after Old Spice, Colgate, and Williams. Oh, and the reintroduced Burma Shave soap. Never tried their original brushless cream... it had pretty much faded from the picture by the time I started shaving. Haven't seen the soap in a while, either, actually. But it was reasonably priced and lathered nicely, with a very basic soap fragrance. Once I started using VDH I hardly ever even tried any other soaps, just various creams and my trusty VDH. Godrej on VDH with a healthy dash of VIBR makes a killer super-lather, BTW.

Arko provides a huge bang for the buck. Great performance. Dirt cheap. Some find the scent off-putting but I kind of like it.

I was really surprised by Erasmic cream after being disappointed by the veggie version of the Erasmic stick. It might not be my favorite cream because I like the scent of other creams, but the performance, especially the in-shave comfort and post-shave moisturizing, is stellar.

I agree La Toja is one of my favorite shavesticks and it is very well-priced
