What's new

Should I always use an aftershave?

I am new to the DE world but I think my technique might be improving. Recently, I have had many shaves where I felt no irritation afterwards.

Should I still use an aftershave lotion/cream when things seem to have gone smoothly?

Thanks in advance,
Jason

It's up to you. I went for several years without using one, I used an alum block and witch hazel. Last year around Christmas for some reason I had the urge to try aftershave and fell down another darn rabbit hole.

I've always used some sort of aftershave splash. But I would say it's definitely not necessary. I do enjoy the scent and the way it makes my skin feel.

Up to you. I didn't for a while then found out my skin likes alcohol based aftershaves, so I always use one. Plus it smells good and is another indulgence.

Aftershave is not a must off course. It's a big bonus depending on what you seek in a shaving ritual...

Depends on your skin and the type of soap. Just like some bath soap that dries you out like a withered cactus I won't lie I needed lotion sometimes on my legs. Got rid of that soap afterwards. The soaps I have now for bath & shave are excellent and I don't need a/s it but I like it. Oh and depends on where you live too. Harsh winter conditions I'd imagine you'd need it.

Best way to answer such questions is to try it both ways. See if you can determine the difference. Skin differs from person to person so one answer isn't going to fit every situation.

I use Witch hazel followed by a aftershave lotion (Clubman, Brut, Old Spice) and then finish off with Nivea post shave balm.
My face smells and feels like a million bucks.

yes, you should use some sort of moisturizing lotion or balm after shaving.

and i expect the bulldogs will eat up kentucky tonight.

I like alcohol based aftershaves. Old Spice, Skin Bracer, Clubman, Bay Rum. They used to dry my face out terribly. THEN I switched to Stirling Soap shave soaps and bath soap bars. My face is no longer dry after shaving. Rather, its moisturized and feels great! I would venture a guess other Artisan soaps are similar, but Stirling fit my price range...

I can NOT use lotion or balm on my face after shaving. It leads to more irritation than a Derby blade. I can use it a few hours after shaving, but I no longer need to worry!

You do NOT need an aftershave. I do, however, highly recommend Witch hazel with some Glycerin added. 2oz of witch hazel with 20 drops of glycerin works for me. Not sticky at that level. I use T.N. Dickinsons witch hazel, I feel its better than the cheapie stuff, and it last long enough price is not a major concern. Glycerin is $4 for 6oz and will last a LONG time! You can also spike your AS splashes with Glycerin if youd like. You still get the Alcohol antiseptic properties, but the glycerin will help a little to lock in moisture. Probably only use 15 drops per 2oz then, because some AS has glycerin in it, and you don't want to make it sticky!
