Shopping In Chicago

My wife and I's ten year anniversary is coming up. In about a month (Mid December) we are going to go to Chicago for two or three days. We hope to go to at least one museum and do some shopping. I don't get a chance to go anywhere that really has much in the way of shaving supplies here in Indiana. So, my question is, where do I need to go when in Chicago. What great must sees are there in the world of wet shaving in Chicago?

Also, we would like to go somewhere fancy for dinner. I have never been anywhere that a tuxedo would fit in. The expensive fancy places around here are still too casual for a tux. I am not positive we will be able to afford it, but if we can, where do you suggest?

Thanks for any advice.

Shaving Places:
Truefitt and Hill - It is on Michigan Ave, near the Drake Hotel
Merz Apothocary - This place has a small store within a store I think in the Macy's on State St...but you need to go to the original store a little north of the city.

As for dinner, I can't think of a place that a tux would be the norm.

Dinner - The Signature Room at the 95th

It's on the 95th floor of the John Hancock Building, with great food and a stunning view of the city.

Reservations are a must, and there is a dress code.

There aren't many restaurants in the US that require black tie, are there? Charlie Trotter's is the name I've always heard thrown around as the nicest, most expensive place in Chicago; they require a jacket but it's not black tie.

Go to Heaven on 7 for lunch and try the gumbo. There's one on Ohio & Rush, right off Michigan. The other day you should get an Italian beef sandwich or a Chicago-style hot dog (if you put ketchup on it I'll...no I won't have to murder you, someone there will). I don't really know where to tell you to go for dinner because my parents were never "fancy restaurant" people and I don't live there anymore.

For museums, it's a toss-up for me between the Art Institute (famous paintings. "A Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grande Jatte" is awesome up close), the Fields Museum (GIANT DINOSAUR SKELETON), and the Museum of Science and Industry (German U-boat. You go inside it. 'nuff said.)

Just followed the link to the Signature Room website. Looks like a great place, but really, that's what passes for a dress code these days? That's just sad.

Have a good time - put on the tux and show people what "dressing for dinner" really means.

I've gone to some pretty nice places, but I've yet to need to wear a tux... Irrespective of what you decide to do for your fancy pants dinner, you have to go check out the original Gino's East Pizza. There are a bunch of Gino's, but hit up the original one. IIRC it's over by Lasalle and West Chicago Ave. :thumbup1:

Have fun

Truefitt and Hill is the biggie. Merz would be second.

There's also a C.O. Bigelow store on Michigan Avenue. If you're looking for cologne, Neiman Marcus has Creed, Jo Malone and Guerlien. The Barney's store has Le Labo.

As far as a Tux appropriate restaurant, I'd think about the restaurant one of the better hotels: Avenues at The Peninsula, Seasons at The Four Seasons or NOMI at the Park Hyatt.

The Pump Room (once the most famous restaurant in the America) would also be a good choice. Not sure how busy it is these days. It seems to go through phases.

Alinea is consistently named as one of the best restaurants in the world; however, a tux may seem a bit out of place in said restaurant. Perhaps you can call ahead to any of these aforementioned restaurants and ask if a tux is appropriate?

Have fun!

try pizzaria uno. i use to live in harvey il. i sure miss the pizza around there. i went to h.s. on the east side of chicago at st. francis desales. i live at skyline al. now. my wife and i are thinking of moving to chicago for a little while. she's a nurse so she's been looking into travel nursing. they make double the money plus the agency you work for pays for you a place to live so you can't beat that.

Alinea is easily one of the best places in North America... A couple of my friends and I pitched in and got a $600 gift card as wedding gift there... Still a few hundred short though for a full tasting menu for two (with wine pairings).

If it were my money? I'd go to Gibson's for steaks in the ...... Triangle (Rush/Division) and get ripped on 30 year scotch looking at fake women all night, but thats just me though. The signature room is a tourist trap, but a solid place... maybe just grab pre-dinner drinks there after you tear down Michigan Ave.

A tux here would be a bit much... I think the only preople who wear tuxes in Chicago are going to Prom, in a wedding or dropping $5K at a charity event...

Be sure to check out the C.O. Bigelow and Torneau stores in Water Tower Place across from the Bloomingdales building (T&H Store)...

Great suggestions thus far... Something I always recommend during the early winter if there is snow... I always liked taking girlfriends on the carriage rides at night down the magnificent mile... Not sure you want to do it in a tux, but its fun nonetheless. ;)

Oh, and garretts caramel corn. definitely get some garrets, yumm... if you have never had it - its a must. Stores all over the place downtown.

Well it's just business casual in The Signature Room if memory serves me correctly, but well worth the visit. The view from up there is awesome, especially at night.

It is indeed.
A suit and tie is not out of place. It's kinda touristy, but the food is very good and your right, the view is great for dinner.

If you just want a view of the city, without the dinner check out the ledge at Willis Tower (formerly Sears Tower)
