Sheffield Steel For Twelve Bucks?

I just won this auction for a 5/8 George Wostenholm & Son square tip. I figured that $11.95 with free shipping is a pretty good price for a razor like this. I'm not familiar with this particular brand but I can see that it's made from Sheffield steel. I can't see any nicks in the blade and it looks like it should hone up well (I'll just need to find someone to do it). Has anyone here had any experience with this brand? The seller mentioned that the pins aren't that tight so it sounds like a good candidate for a rescale. Thanks!

I wasn't aware until doing a little digging that this is the same company that gave us the pipe razors. Now I'm even more excited!

The loose scales can be tightened pretty easily, usually. The person who hones it for you might be prepared to do it if you don't want to.

I'm pretty handy. What would it take? Just a little extra peening of the pins?

There are some really good bargains on Sheffield steel these days. I bought a Thomas Hardy & Sons last week. It looks to be around 11/16 with what I'm pretty sure are ivory scales. It cost me a bit under UK13 pounds which is about $20. The blade needs a bit of cleaning up but it was hard to pass up for that price.

Love dem Wosties! You got a good deal. They would be worth a lot more except they are so common. Get it honed and get to shaving with it.

The razor arrived today. However, it looks like I've got some cleaning to do. The razor was apparently shipped without any oil on it and it tarnished a bit in transit. Other than that, I'll need to tighten the pins a bit before sending it out for honing since the blade hits the scales from time to time (I knew it was a bit loose at the time of purchase). Other than that, it appears to be a nice straight.

Cool. My bet is the tarnish was there well before it was shipped. No worries, it'll clean up nicely just the same.

It looks like the tarnish closest to the pin has been there a while. However, the tang is definitely much darker than in the photo. The good news is that's all on the surface and it seems to be cleaning up.
