Shaving with surgical scars

I have had a scar on my throat since I was an infant, due to surgery. While much of it does not grow any hair to shave, some of it does, and it is consistently difficult to avoid either leaving obvious long hairs, or opening up a weeper along the edge of it. The older I get, the more my beard grows in around it, and the more difficult it becomes to avoid either of these two issues. Does anyone else here have similar issues with shaving with a surgical scar? How do you handle the issue, in your pursuit of a DFS?

I don't have any such scars, but you might want to try some really light blade buffing to get those hairs. When I say light I really mean just that, use no pressure at all and see if that'll work for you. I've done that before in area's that had a cut, and it worked fine. Not sure how that will work in your case, but its worth the try. Hope it helps.

I have one on my upper lip. Split completely by a slapshot for 8 stitches inside, 10 stitches outside. I ate that puck about 5 years ago so the scar is still a bit deep. I stretch it out (using my tongue) and blade buff, also open combs work brilliantly.

My only razor is an open comb (Merkur 1904), so I'm with you on that one. I wonder if it's the scar or my technique - or some combination thereof - that makes it so that blades rated really sharp by the community are too harsh on my throat.

I hope this isn't taken wrong but I believe the best would be using a modern blade just for that area. The flexing or shocks that are built into the blade in a Mach 3 would provide very good protection.Otherwise have a very slick soap on hand and here is the key. You'll need the underlying slickness of the soap after you rinsed off the lather to provide you with the glide so you can see what your doing. It's not unusual to have two razors on hand to do a shave. Sometimes I use an injector for my difficult areas when I'm in a rush. Also an injector can stop right at the line of a scar in tight spaces. Good luck.

It's not taken wrong, I promise, and thanks for your input. I had the same problems I described with a Fusion Power Proglide, using a brush and soap (VDH tallow).

I'm not a big fan of the Fusion. Too many blades thus causing irratation. Less blades the better. Mix things up and try the Schick Hydro three blade. As you well know this far into shaving different blades by different companies work for one person but not others. Perhaps the modern Gillette is to harsh or five blades were. Bring it down a notch. I've heard good things about the modern Schick. Mix it up and go freestyle and find what works for you. Also keep a block of alum on have for those days of oops. Cheers.

I've had similar experiences with the Bic Comfort 3 disposable.
