Shaving while traveling

Hi All,

I travel frequently for work and by the end of day 2 traveling I look unpresentable. When everyone here travels how do you go about handling razors on a plane or do you bring a disposable?

If you are checking your bags, there are no restrictions, but I would not take anything I would be afraid to loose. If you go with carry on, take the disposable.

From what ive read alot of people use carts. Or either buy blades at the location or send them to where they are staying.

I pack my shaving gear in a dopp kit or a Zip-lock bag and that goes into my checked luggage.
TSA is staffed entirely by fools and Idiots, (in my opinion) and I can just imagine them freaking out and declaring my shave stick a lethal weapon or some other equally ridicules scenario.

If you can't check your luggage then its disposables or cartridges for you, but I have seen them confiscate those to.

If I fly, I take a cartridge razor and any brushless cream.
I don't want to have any more interaction with TSA than absolutely necessary and I'm sure that they feel the same about me.

I'd see what combination of soap/cream works well with a blade you can get at Walgreens or cvs, or any other common store, then take the razor, that cream/soap, brush and buy some blades there. you can afford to toss the remaining blades since that would still likely be cheaper and a better shave than cartridges. It's just the blades that must be checked.

I suppose a lot depends on how often you travel. I can get away with using a twin blade disposable and bar soap when I travel, but I also don't go out of town that often (maybe a couple times a year at most). If your skin doesn't respond well to shaving with bar soap, that might be a problem.

Mike H said it best when he said not to take anything you would be afraid to lose. I refuse to take a DE with me because I'm not prepared to see any of my collection fall victim to theft, loss, or damage.

I did weeklong trips every month for many months. I hate checking a bag, so I packed a nice Dopp kit minus blades: Simpson case, 3-piece razor of choice, shave stick, alum, aftershave. Picked up blades at my destination city, and paid way too much for them.

Would often throw the remaining blades in a small bubble envelope and mail home for a couple of dollars. Life's too short to let the TSA steal enjoyable shaves from me, even if it means they cost a few bucks more.

Because I'm risk averse, I'd also pack a cart razor just in case I couldn't find a pack of blades on the first day.

Take a simple shave stick. Either Arko or Palmolive. If you like something a little nice, look into one of Mama Bear's Shave Sticks. When I got my junior Omega Badger Brush, it came in a covered tube and thats what I use to transport it. If your brush doesn't have that then you can find special containers from many vendors. As far as razors, don't take anything that you couldn't lose. I usually take one of my more modern 3 piece razors and take it apart and throw it into a case I used to use for my cartridge razor. It fits together very well. You can also get a cheap vintage razor like a super speed if thats what you like more.

Taking the cart in your carry on will be your best bet. Using the cream in a tube and face lathering isn't bad. I've had plenty of blades confiscated by TSA in my time.

I mailed a pack of blades to my parents house before I went home for chirstmas, worked out pretty good since no store that I can find back home sells razor blades... heck I can't even think of any places in Edmonton that would sell blades either. Thank god for the internet eh?

For a longer stay, I mailed blades. I also put my DE razor in the ziplock baggie which I took out and put with my liquids before the carry-on extra. The TSA attendant thanked me as she said she needed to check the head via visual inspection to see if a blade was present.

The TSA caused me to miss a flight in October because eight of them (yes, eight) couldn't decide if my son's bottle was a flight risk. Ultimately they decided it was and dumped the contents (distilled water).

I have a DE I use for travel but I don't often take it with me unless it's a road trip because I'm afraid of losing it. It was a Gillette travel item from 1960 that an old girlfriend found brand new, unopened in a thrift store for $6.

When flying I usually just pack a Fusion ProGlide because I figure I can find a replacement anywhere.

So I guess you're calling me an idiot then, since that's what I do for a living. Actually, I agree with you, there are a lot of idiots. It wouldn't be a true Federal Government agency if it weren't comprised of at least 40% idiots.

If you want to take your DE with you, you can carry on the razor, but not the blades. Now common sense says the blades aren't a threat. But the people in DC who make all of the decisions like to overreact, so we have that restriction, along with the large liquids ban. Most TSA officers know you can't take down a plane in post 9/11 America with a small DE blade and a large tub of TOBS, but very few officers would be willing to join the unemployment line just so your face could be BBS for your trip.

I digress. Check the blades, carry on the razor with the blade removed. Take the razor out of your bag, because we need to make sure there's no blade in there. It goes faster if it's already out the bag. You can put it in the ziplock with your liquids. Cream needs to be 3.4 ounces (100ml) or less. If you have a big tub, check it. If you have a small 2 oz tube, put it in the ziplock bag and carry it on. Soap pucks are good to go, regardless of size. Brushes are good to go too. Aftershave, whether it's splash or balm, must conform to the 3.4 ounce rule, so my 6 ounce bottle of Clubman will be checked in when I fly next week.

If you prefer to use a straight, your only option is to check it in, and in some airports a straight razor in your carry on can even mean a call to the police, due to silly city ordinances that consider straight razors weapons.
