Shaving Creams that are a must?

I'll admit right up front that I'm almost completely a shaving soap guy. However, after reading the glowing reviews on the bomb SC, I decided to order some and try it out. Haven't got it yet, but it got me to thinking: What are some other "must try" shaving creams. So far, I think eventually I'd like to try:

1. Castle Forbes
2. Acqua di Parma
3. Domenico Caraceni
4. Coates maybe?

I've tried TOBS, proraso and Irish Moos SC, but am not overwhelmed. Any others I should most definitely look to?

Though I think that the AS smells much better, Speick SC is quite awesome, and holds it's own against creams at any price-point.

I had Speick SC for the first time this morning and it was great! I love scents and I think it has lavender and spikenard in it.

You must try Musgo real. A truly wonderful shaving cream. Lanolin works wonders on your skin.

There is also a little gem that is not very well-known. It's called "O Melhor". This cream is produced by Confiança soaps, an old portuguese company founded in 1894 and recently acquired by Ach. Brito, makers of "Musgo Real".
"O Melhor" means "The Best" in portuguese. And that is a name that suits just perfect.:001_smile

Of the ones you listed, Domenico Caraceni is wonderful both in performance and scent. However, the scent is strong so make sure you read up on it to see if it is right for you. It is the one cream that I can still smell in my brush the next day even after the brush has been rinsed and dried.

The Castle Forbes are nice but I treat them more as a soft soap than cream due to their density. All the scents are very good, but I prefer the lime. The same thing on density can be said for AdP, althought I was not a fan of the scent.

Penhaligons creams are very good and have excellent scents. I have also enjoyed Floris shave creams which have incredible scents as well.

For some more mid-range creams you can check out D.R. Harris, T&H or Trumper. All are quality and don't cost as much as the ones above.

They are special in that it is nice to once in a while use something different. Castle Forbes for instance is one of the best creams made. They tend to be more expensive than soaps but they have their place.

Take Care,
Richard

I think every wetshaver should try:

Proraso
TOBS Avocado
TOBS or Trumper's Rose
Trumper's Coconut
Speick
Musgo Real

I'm not saying that these are "the best", even though that argument could be made, but these are the some of the tried and true staples of the wetshaving world, and therefore should be considered "must try".

There are many, many other wonderful creams in varying scents and such, but I wouldn't consider any true search complete without giving these a shot. Having said that, I'm sure I'm leaving some out.

Kiss my face mint. Even though the mint scene doesn’t last, the cream EXPLODES into lather with every brush stroke.

I don't know the consistency of number 3, but I think that the first two should be ranked underneath 'soft soaps'. Their silly putty-consistency is not what I associate with 'cream'. They are, by all means, good products worthy of sampling so having them on your radar won't hurt.

Coates is no longer produced and what stocks remain is not always in good condition. The brand name has been bought by a purveyor of fine shaving parafernalia with the intent on bringing the brand back in circulation, but it will not be the old formula. I believe that some scents will be copied over, though. The first pots should hit the (English) market in August.

You have taken into account that creams require a noticably different water-soap ratio? If you haven't you should experiment beyond your usual parameters.

That said you shouldn't expect miracles. It's still fatty acid soap which may or may not suit your demanding shaving needs exactly. I consider TOBS to be a benchmark of sorts: reasonably priced, good range of scents, lathers easily, shaves easily. With you not finding TOBS special, you can skip Bodyshop cream. Proraso I find horrible: the menthol numbs the skin ever so slightly so I always run the risk of severe razor burn if I'm not paying attention. If you find Proraso not special, then you can ignore Bigelow and Omega. Irisch Moos SC is B-quality at best: for some reason it is too 'crisp' and not very protective. If you don't like this one you needn't bother with Tabac cream too.

Other brands to try: Musgo Real (lanolin + classical fragrance make this a winner), J.M. Fraser (great value for money), La Toja (very, very heavy and thick lather), and Trumper (any scent, lathers thicker than TOBS but not as thick as La Toja). There's more than these suggestions of course, but these provide a good start.

Musgo Real :001_tt1:

I also have the travel size of all three of Castle Forbes scents. I am not a fan of the lime or lavendar, but the Cedarwood is very nice and all three creams perform top notch!
