Shaving Cream suggestions?

My wonderful wife picked up some samples of AOS lavender cream for me, and I LOVE the stuff. The smell and lather that it creates are wonderful. I'm inexperienced in creams in general, so was wondering if this was primo stuff. Does it get better? If so, do you guys have any other recommendations of things I must try? I love the scents of lavender and sandalwood, so anything like that would be great!

Castle Forbes makes excellent creams. They have one in both of the scents that you mentioned, although the sandalwood version is more cedar than sandalwood. They are also a dense cream, more like a croap.

I have sensitive skin so I must use creams that are made for sensitive skin. Because of this, I've done alot of research. I am currently using TOBS Jermyn St., Nancy Boy Replenishing, and plan to order Spencer & Devon Unscented soon. The TOBS and NB are excellent creams, both for my sensitive skin but also provide an excellent shave otherwise. And, from what I've read on B&B, the S&D may be better than TOBS and NB. None of these are Lavendar or Sandalwood, but the product line of these three offer lavendar, sandalwood, or something similar to those scents.

I also have tried Proraso Green, which is an excellent cream (just not for my sensitive skin), and it does offer a sandalwood version.

I do seem to be lamenting my sensitive skin, huh. Sorry about that :001_rolle.

Two brands of creams will always be in my shave den. TOBS and AOS- they perform great for me and I enjoy many of the scents that they offer. Don't think you can go wrong with either of those two brands.
Right now I am using TOBS Mr. Taylor for the past week and always get a great lather.

IMO, you can't go wrong with any of the 3T's (TOBS, Trumpers, T&H). Castle Forbes is another. Penhaligon's and Floris No. 89 are a step up in luxury, mostly for their scent offerings.

Thanks guys! Once I recover from my last few acquisitions, looks like I'll be purchasing some of these. The TOBs Avocado caught my eye, so I'll probably order that and some Proraso Sandalwood, which also caught my eye. Is the Tabac cream as great as I hear the soap is?

I think AOS creams are great, so if you're looking for better stuff, its only going to be better by degrees. Its not quite the leap as from Gillette Foamy to one of the favored creams here.

I have used soap (Cella) ever since going back to wet shaving from canned foam, so I don't know anything about creams. I would like to give one a try, but I don't want to spend much money on what is basically a whim. Is there a "Best Buy" in shaving creams? TIA!

Wait for the Bath and Bodyworks, buy 2 get 1 free sale on Bigelow (Proraso) shaving cream tubes.

There's a great thread rounding up various Sandalwood creams a few pages back. The Art of Shaving seems to be well-regarded.

I would recommend checking out CO Bigelow, which you can get at Bath and Body Works. Also, if you are making an order, check out TOBS. I like Mr Taylor scent.

I agree. Pricey? Yes. Overpriced? Sure.

Lavender CF aorma/frangrance? Heavenly! :)

AOS Creams are one of the upper-tier performing Shave Creams, the AOS Lavender scent is my favorite Lavender Cream period!

Yes, it does get even better, because there are many high-end brands and scents out there just begging to be tried!

You really ought to try Trumper and Taylor creams. Both are top performers, and Taylor is also a real value. I have not tried Trumper sandalwood, but I hear it is similar to Coate's sandalwood, which I really like (alas, Coate's is no longer in production). I also hear good things about Taylor sandalwood, which is like their sandalwood cologne.

I also highly recommend Truefitt & Hill lavender, which is close to Coate's lavender, my favorite cream ever.

If you're willing to branch out a bit, try a rose, lime or almond cream. Trumper Limes is a classic, and a favorite of mine.

I love Trumper creams, especially the Coconut scent and I think one of the best creams and best creams for the money is Vulfix. I like Lavender and also Rose.

Tried Alba Botanica shave cream today. Doesn't lather, you have to put it on with your hands instead of a brush, but holy cow, it works great. I've been having trouble with irritation on my neck using both Pacific shave cream and Colonel Conk shave soap. Stopped in at Central Market (high end supermarket here in Texas) and scanned over what was a very good selection. The Alba Botanica smelled pretty good and the price was in the middle, so I decided to give it a shot. Picked up the Mango Vanilla scent. Seemed like it would complement my bay rum after shave.

So I squirted a dollup in my shaving bowl this morning and tried to make a lather. No lather. ***? Turns out it doesn't lather and is meant to be put on by hand. OK, whatever. So I rubbed it on. Kind of weird that I couldn't see it on my face. But once I started shaving, I realized it's the best shaving cream I've tried to date. I used a Parker 99r razor with an Astra blade, and got absolutely zero irritation on my neck and chin. That was a first.

Three things about this cream. One, when I went to the manufacturer's website, it seems to be marketed mostly to women. Had I seen that before I bought it, I wouldn't have bought it. But, two, it freakin' WORKS. So if you are having problems with irritation, you might want to give this stuff a shot. However, three, it doesn't make a lather and it doesn't work very well with a brush. I kind of like the ritual of using the brush, so while I'm going to keep using it because it's the best shave cream I've yet tried, I'm going to keep looking for a brand that I can apply with a shaving brush.
