Shaving Cream Question

Hi, I'm new to the community as well as wet shaving. Switched a few months ago from my gillette foam in a can. One of the best decisions of my life. I enjoy shaving every morning now. I bought the $100 Art of Shaving kit and my unscented tub of shaving cream is less than half full at this point. What shaving cream do you recommend? Should I stick with the Art of Shaving or is there something better? I heard good things about Trumpers and T&H, but I would have to order them and their $30 dollars. This would be a big step for me with ordering shaving cream paying shipping and handling and waiting a week for it to arrive. Is that all worth it? I'm not too sure the proraso would be good since it contains benzocaine and i'm also quite fond of the tubs instead of tubes. I've also seen Zierhs Shaving Gel and Cream as well as lab science shaving cream. Are those any good? Any recommendations would be great, as well as some tips on wet shaving. Thanks in advance.

Click on 'Reviews' at the top of the page, there's an extensive section of shaving cream reviews.

The consensus is the AoS makes a great product, but they're at the top of the price range. Proraso / Bigelow is well loved, and the mentholy kick is welcome on chilly mornings. Zierh and Lab make decent creams, but they're not made to be used with a brusy and they're also kind of pricey. If you check the reviews, you can find lots of great products in the $10-20 range.

Arko gets a lot of good reviews as being very good and very cheap. You can get a dozen sticks (900 grams) for $27 shipped from Turkey. People argue over the scent but from the way it's described I think I would like it - smells like soap. Reading the reviews would be a good idea.

I personally love TOBS creams, and at $15 bucks a pop they're half the price of AoS. I'll add the disclaimer that I haven't personally used AoS stuff, but I'm very doubtful that they perform twice as well. There are, of course, plenty of other creams out there. The scents are a matter of personal opinion, but if the general consensus says that a cream lathers and protects well then you should be ok buying it. You may also want to look into shave soaps. It's a bit of a different world, but if you haven't tried them then you really wouldn't know if you like to use them. The triple milled soaps last dang near forever as well.

Even more inexpensive is Kiss my Face. I use it and for me it works great. Bed, Bath and Beyond for that one. Do not forget Poraso/Bigelow's. They have it at Bath and body works in the mall.

+1

Kiss My Face is dirt cheap and available everywhere. It comes in a variety of scents. I'm not too fond of their "fruity" aromas, but I do like their Lavender/Shea and Fragrance Free.

B&BW's Bigelow/Proraso is a must have in any shave den. For many wet-shavers, including me, it was our first introduction to something other than goop-in-a-can. A $10 large tube will last you about 3 months of daily use, but you can often pick it up for much less than that with B&BW's frequent sales. The menthol kick is great for those dog-days of summer.

Scour the aisles of your local supermarket and health-food stores ... you'll find brands like Nivea, Neutrogena, Cremo, and many others.

Order a Blade Sampler pack from one of the many fine vendors here ... the blade sampler is a rite of passage around here. No matter what razor you're using, youll need to try it with a number of different brands of blades until you find the one that hits your sweet spot.

As for wet-shaving tips, you've come to the right place ... just click around and you'll find plenty of advice on razors, blades, brushes, creams, aftershaves, techniques, etc.

Finally, welcome to B&B, and Happy Shaving!
