What's new

Shaved with a disposable the other day...

It was day two of three double shifts in a row and I didn't have the time, patience, or mental fortitude for a traditional wet shave. I still used my brush and lathered like normal. The results? A damn fine shave. I thought for a while that maybe this double edge shaving was all a fraud and that I've been allowing myself to be duped for the last 7 months. Then this morning it was back to DE. Yup, it was a glorious shave. Smooth, close, comfortable, and relaxing. Barely a tingle when the clubman hit my face and still BBS smooth 12 hours later. And the blade I used today was 1/8th the price and lasts the same number of shaves. I guess there is no shame in carts/disposables but at least I feel better today about my commitment to DE shaving.

I didn't pack a DE last time I took a trip. I did bring a tube of trumpers and my travel EJ brush. The blade i did use was a double bladed disposable, and i used a scrubbing technique i saw on mantic's site. It was a DFS. I think the secret lies in the prep+lather+sharp blade.

Most on this board would agree, that the vast majority of the improvement we see in shaving when switching to DE lies with superior products, and proper shaving technique, rather than the actual tool used: a person who used a shaving brush/ shaving cream/ shaving soap and proper technique with their current razor would see vast improvement.

I can get a great shave with a Gillette Trac II, a Schick Injector, a Gem Single Edge, or any number of DE Razors: technique always trumps hardware/ software assuming that the hardware/ software are of good quality.

I was in a shop buying some Trumpers products the other day, the owner was very keen on shaving and happy for a chat .... interestingly, he said that after much trailing with different methods, he has found that the only way he can get an irritation free shave is from using disposables (obviously with good lather).

+1 - I can get a good enough shave with multi-bladed carts and disposables using proper shaving technique, but getting a great shave with a single WTG pass as advertised just hasn't happened for me. They can give a good shave if used for multiple pass beard reduction, but too many blades in the cart or too many passes and I wind up with razor burn in a bad way. YMMV.

Multi-bladed carts and disposables are only evil if used as the advertisements say they should be used.

When I don't want to travel with my DE, a disposable works just fine. Of course, I still take my creams/soaps and a brush.

I'm no gonna lie, I've used Schlick Quattro or whatever it's called (I honestly don't know, lol), using brush and arko of course, and got a pretty dang good shave out of it. I went 2 days in a row with it, and began getting my red irritation, and Ingrowns, so I stopped and came back to my senses. There's just nothing better than the good prep with quality soaps/creams, a proficient stroking technique, and just one super sharp DE blade.

While shopping awhile back, I picked up a bag of six Schick Slim Twin disposables for $2.
Last month, for a change a pace, I decided to see how many shaves I could get out of one.
The answer: one dozen Damn Fine Shaves, plus two more okay shaves.
They're almost identical to the Gillette thin twins I used for most of the Eighties.
I'm not giving up on my Fatboy, but they really were a pleasure to use.
FWIW, the soap was either Proraso or Razorock Fresco, with my Semogue 1305.

Good for you
