Shave Ready?

I read a lot about getting a shave ready razor for one's first straight. I purchased a Dovo Bismarck from SRD and it says on their site that their razors are profesionally sharpened before they are shipped. I also know that Dovo too says the razors are "Shave Ready" when they leave the factory, but I have also read a lot of people saying they are definitely not shave ready. So I wondering does SRD just move these straight to the customer or do they actually hone them and make sure they are truely "Shave Ready". What do the people that have bought from SRD think.

Thanks for any help.

PS I am in no way trying to tarnish or question the integrity of SRD or Dovo just simply wondering if I need to have my razor sent to Lynn before using it.

Lynn actually honed your razor if you got it from SRD. He opens all the boxes and hones all the razors (provided you bought them from SRD) before they are shipped out.

So, don't strop it when you get it. The razor right now will be your benchmark for sharpness.

Good luck!

If you are confident you can strop it properly, do it before you shave. When I got my razor, I tried shaving with it before stropping it. It didn't turn out well. The razor dragged a lot and didn't cut that close. The next time before I shaved I stropped it and it was much better. There was probably some stuff that accumulated on the blade that needed to be stropped off making it cleaner.

Well, the OP can use this advice if he wants, but I wouldn't recommend it. If Lynn's finishing hone is worse than your first time stropping I'll eat my shoe.

Usually, the razor is already pre-stropped...

The ones I got from experienced members were all honed & stropped & I was told not to strop before the first shave or two.

Other's I've bought "shave ready" didn't seem to have been stropped after the honing.

If it came freshly honed by Lynn then you shouldn't need to strop it.

Sorry, but I don't agree with this one. If Lynn honed it, do NOT strop it until after you've shaved with it once. One of the prime ways for us newbies to dull a razor is with bad stropping technique. I have bought a couple new razors from SRD and honed by Lynn and they were scary sharp when I got them.
