shampoo bars and apple cider vinegar rinse

For those that have short hair and use natural shampoo bars on their hair, is an apple cider vinegar rinse really necessary? what is the exact purpose of an apple cider vinegar rinse and is it really needed for guys with short hair?

I have short hair, use a Liggett's shampoo bar and rinse with apple cider vinegar. The vinegar evens the pH of your hair after shampooing and helps ensure that any residue is removed. It also acts somewhat like a conditioner. The vinegar rinses clean and leaves no scent. Sometimes I do skip the rinse and the results are fine so it's certainly not required.

There is a long thread elsewhere in this forum about using a cider vinegar mix (50/50 with water) to control dandruff. It was said this worked for some time, but not indefinitely. The OP then started using something else. I just started the cider vinegar process (I left mine in instead of rinsing and the smell subsided within 15 minutes or so) to help with dandruff. I hope it works. I can tell my hair is really soft today. Time will tell.

It will I have done it for years.

Necessary? Probably not. When I used shampoo bars I used it every time I washed my hair because I didn't like the feel of my hair after a shampoo bar. Now that I've gone back to reg shampoo, I rinse with ACV about once a week. I keep my hair short (#3 buzz), but I still like the way my hair feels after the ACV rinse. I keep some store brand ACV in a small plastic container in the shower and use it if I remember. It's cheaper and better than conditioner so why not?

I use a bar and have never done any kind of rinse other than water. I have no dandruff issues to speak of. My wife does not do a rinse either.

I wash my hair with normal soap and have never used rinse. After washing I use Hair Tonic. It leaves my hair soft and I never had problems with dandruffs.

I just started using Mike's shampoo bar. I think I will try it for a lark. One of my fondest olfactory memories were my mother's hair smelling like ACV when I was a kid.

Just used mikes shampoo bar for the first time. The squeakiness is crazy. You might need an ACV but I just used conditioner and it chilled right out. Great stuff though

I've used a shampoo bar a few times, the Ogallala Bay Rum bar. I've used it by itself and with the ACV rinse after, and once my hair is dry I can't tell the difference. I just received my Chagrin Valley shampoo bars today, so I'll give them a try with and without vinegar and see what happens.

The first bar shampoos I started with several years ago were by Chagrin Valley. They suggested that a vinegar rinse may be necessary for awhile after switching from commercial shampoo products to remove residual chemical build up. I am copying a section of their blurb here: http://www.chagrinvalleysoapandsalve.com/idascorner/shampvinegar.aspx. I did the rinse several times, then stopped because it no longer seemed necessary. I have since switched to QCS shampoo bars (which I prefer) and have not found a need to use the rinse.
