I just have to say thank you to everyone for giving such great advice on this site. What a cool community. I just had my second "real" shave ever and it was amazing. I have a long handle merkur and used the merkur blade the first time and it seemed too dull and pulled. I started to think "why did I decide to go this route?" Not giving up because of everyone's success and advice here I went to Art of Shaving and got the shave soap and some gillette blades (sharper)...and what a difference!! Now I know what all the hype is about and can't wait to shave again! I'll be picking up some Astra SP's and some Feathers, along with some good soaps. Thanks again and happy to be in this cool family.

Gillette DE blades? I didn't know AOS sold anything but Merkurs (at $13 for a 10 pack).
AOS was purchased by Procter and Gamble who owns Gillette back in 2009. So I'm actually more surprised they even sell Merkur blades and razors.

The AOS by me (Roseville, CA) sold the Gillette DE Platinum blades...5 for $6.
Ridiculously high prices on blades, by the way. Once you get a chance, you should go to www.razorbladesandmore.com and buy a few 5 packs of well known blades, find one or two that you like, and then buy them in larger amounts. Most of us don't pay more than about 25 cents a blade; some pay only about 8 cents a blade, versus the greather than a dollar a blade price you paid at AOS.
I would suggest a trial pack of SuperMax SuperPlatinums, Astra SP or SS, Gillette 7 o'clock blues, Gillette 7 o'clock yellows, and Feathers.

IMHO Merkur blades are absolutely the most overpriced DE blades in the world. With no other brand, AFAIK, do you get less quality for more money. Almost any popular DE blade will outshave the Merkur blade in any DE razor, including a Merkur razor.
Don't pay $1 or more for a DE blade, unless maybe it is a NOS Personna 74. You can get perfectly acceptable blades in several brands for around $.15 each. Even Walmart Wilkinsons deliver a better value for your $.
I am partial to Israeli Personnas, myself but I will cheerfully load up a walmart wilkie or a generic ASR if that's all I got and I want a DE shave, which is not often. Either one will shave quite decently in my Slim, and I can get them without going online and waiting for them.
