SE razors

Good question, I wish some current manufacturer would step up and make a contemporary SE razor. Especially, since IMHO, they shave so much better than most of their DE cousins.

I do not think there is enough market yet. I recently started using a GEM Travel (short handle)1912 SE razor. I finished my 5th shave on a GEM blade this am. It was dragging a little, but I got a very close shave. I'm going to try a sixth shave with the blade Friday.

My GEM Travel is well worn and I have a Gold, 1912 razor coming in the mail. If someone made a stainless steel copy ( a perfect copy) of the 1912 at a reasonable price (up to around $35.00) I would buy it as fast as I can. If the handle was made like Cooncatbobs Mastiff or the Merkur HD it could be perfection in razor.

I do not know how many million GEM 1912's were made. I have two travel GEMS, one nickel or chrome plated in a ivory travel case, the well worn one and the gold, regular size GEM. I have not shaved with the cased travel yet. It is in excellant condition. I have been getting such great shaves with the worn GEM I do not see any need to use the cased razor.

How come most of the new razors are DE? how come they don't make SE razors anymore? are there any SE out there (new) besides the Cobra??

do you have an SE Razor? I have an Ever Ready Gold tone... really nice. If you want it I'll send it to you free of charge dude. Just PMe your details!

I'd love to see someone manufacture a new SE razor. Of course, I could just get off my lazy butt and finish cleaning my GEM Junior...

For some reason I really don't have a drive to buy a classic single edge razor, but I would like to get an injector some time and if I had the chance I'd try an SE for sure.

My Internet research leads me to beleive that there's currently some trouble finding good shaving quality SE blades so I haven't really looked into the razors much.

I think the blades were an issue as to why the DE won the war, too. They cost about the same to buy but, of course, lasted twice as long because they had two edges (in theory). Many other manufacturers ended up making razors that would take the Gillette style blades and many companies made that type of blade too. This led to competition which brings down the price for the consumer and, in turn, increases sales.

There was a whole lot of different SE blades. If you have a look at the photo at the start of my "Tell me about this SE thing" thread there are about five different blades required by that lot. This made things complicated and expensive for the buyer, and increased the chance that the drug store "on the corner" might not carry your type of blade. Everyone had DE blades, even if it wasn't your brand they would still work.

I think the biggest problem is that they just don't make them.
Sounds like a Chicken or the Egg thing, I know... but it really does come
down to that: people don't use them because they aren't there to be used.

We can argue that DE are more popular, but I'd like to see some stats on
how many folks are using a DE razor as opposed to using the cartridge
razors. Physically, the cartidge razors are SEs... the cartridge itself just has
multiple, inferior blades. I think if companies started manufacturing true
SE razors again and had them readily available on the shelf next to a Mach 3,
it wouldn't take long for consumers to catch on to the price difference and
give them a shot.

Combine that with some clever advertising pointing out the Gentlemanly and
lost Art of shaving, and I think it would be a hit.

SE Blades for GEM type razors are rather easily available. Either online, or at local stores like CVS, Walgreen's and some supermarkets.

That theory is nothing more than a marketing ploy by Gillette.

If you shave frequently with both a DE razor, and a SE razor you will find the blades tend to last about the same length of time, the SE blade perhaps a little longer.

My take on it, is that the flexible, very thin DE blade is incapable of holding an edge for a great length of time. 3-4 shaves, and it's done.

The SE blades being much thicker hold an edge longer. I have had injector blades go to 7 shaves easily.

In the US at least, I see SE blades just about as often as DE blades in drugstores/walmarts and from what I've read here the quality of the SE's you can buy locally is far superior to the DE selections.

+1.
My DE lasts 3-4 shaves, my SE 4-5, and injector 6-8. That means that a single DE edge lasts 1.5-2 shaves.
