SE blades

I was wondering which SE blades are good. I'm thinking of getting the Derby ones. I would love to try out some of the SE razors that I acquired. Any suggestions?

Can't speak to the Derbys but Ted Pella PFTE-coated stainless steel blades get a lot of love here.

I was PIF'd a few Ted Pellas to compare with the Personna stainless steel blades, on the strength of which I put in an order for 200 Pellas. For me, they just start a bit sharper and last a bit longer.

I use Gem Blue Star (available at my local Discount Drugmart) without much trouble,in 2 Gem Micromatics, but I have read a lot of positive reviews concerning the Pella Blades. So they must be pretty good.

I think the Derby's are for shavette style razors, not SE razors. Walgreens and CVS carry SE blades in the shaving section if you just want to try them to see if you will like it before buying bulk.

If you are just getting into SE, I'd suggest picking up a pack of GEM stainless blades from your local Walgreens, if you have a local Walgreens where (when:tongue_sm) you are. If you like them, you can always buy in bulk later.

Derby does offer a SE blade, but it's one of the few I've never tried.

Hold the phone guys, I might have been thinking about Dorco... I'm going to have to start digging through some of my info:blushing:

The SE razors that I have are: Gem Jr., Gem Micromatic, Gem Razor, and a Star. The other 2 that I don't know exactly how to use/get blades for are an Enders Speed and an Eversharp Schick (I think it's an injector, don't know much about injector razors). I probably should have listed this in the original post. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

I've seen Dorco, but never tried them because I've never heard anything good about the. The only single edge Derby's I can find are for a shavette. Let me know what you're digging turns up.

The Gem SE blades and the CVS store branded blades in the shaving sections of the stores are what you are looking for for the Gem razors. I'm not sure about the Star, it could depend on which one you have. I guess you could try it and see if they work.

I can't help you with the Enders or the Schick, sorry.

CVS should have some injector blades for you to try out as well as some SEs. I have no idea what blade an Enders would use

So, I'm pretty sure I imagined the whole Derby thing as I can't find any reference to the blade I had in my head. Must have been confused with Dorco.

The Gem razors will take modern SE blades, the Star is likely intended to take a wedge blade, although I think some Stars take modern SE blades (my confidence is shaken after the whole Derby blade thing:lol:)
Enders took a proprietary blade and I am not aware of a modern equivalent. Schick injector blades are still found in drug stores and online.

Some of the Star SE's are identical to the 1912 Gem's and Ever-Ready's as they were all produced by American Safety Razor. The Gem/Personna blades available from Walgreens and from the Personna online store www.personna.com are stainless steel and will last for several shaves. The Gem Blue Stars, Treets and PAL blades are carbon steel and tend to rust and lose their edge much quicker than the stainless.

Injector blades are a bit tougher to find as most retail stores have stopped carrying them. They occasionally turn up in drugstores but can also be found online at Amazon, www.hocks.com and a few others.

Thank you for that. I looked at the box closer before buying, and they are basically half DE blades. I think I need just the regular SE blades. Thanks again.

+1 The Blue Stars rusted after two shaves. The PAL Blue Carbon Steel blades are blue and did last for several more shaves. The Blue Stars are not blue at all.

As far as injectors go, I know of an old time drug store in NJ that carries injector blades, because the owner still shaves with them and he orders them.

Eversharp Schick (I think it's an injector, don't know much about injector razors).

i'm going to guess that it is an injector... blades for an injector can be an interesting quest

if you just want one pack to try the options i know of are
1. check local CVS and see if they still carry them
2. if you are near a fred's i hear they have 11packs for $2
3. if you are in the military you can get the same 11 packs for $2.50 at the exchange
4. hocks.com has 7 packs of chinese schicks for $4.89+shipping
5. EMS (electron microscopy sciences) and ted pella sell 20 packs but shipping can be a tad steep from what i hear unless you buy in bulk
6. shot in the dark... check locally owned pharmacies and supermarkets

from what i can gather everything but the schick branded blades are all made by ASR

I love SE shaving and got the smoothest, closest shaves ever with Walgreens blades. So I order 100 blades (PTFE coated) from EMS and they are the worst! Where did I go wrong? Arn't these the same blades?

I have never seen the exact same blade come from any online medical (or otherwise) supply place as my local Walgreens. I don't know how to test for PTFE coating, but the grind angles are very different. The result is minimal, if any for me, but I'm sure some people could see drastic differences. A quick visual inspection of the blades will confirm any changes in grind. Do you have a link to the blades you ordered? I have found one batch of blades from Ted Pella were very rough for me on the first couple of shaves, but palm stropping before the first shave helped dramatically.
