SE Blade Question

I'm a noob when it comes to SE razors having just started last Sunday with my practically NOS OCMM(4 days straight and the blade shows no sign of giving up the ghost) but I've had a question pop up.
I picked up a 10 pack of Persona SE blades from a Bed Bath & Beyond in the area and thought it was good that I had Walgreens as a back up.
Yesterday due to an infected tooth I had to wait around the Walgreen for a prescription to be filled and noticed Walgreen has rearranged their shaving stuff and the SE blades are no more.

Has anyone tried SE blade refills for SE scrapers found at hardware stores?
This maybe a "well duhhh" question but considering I was thinking of a SE razor for my travel kit but if a Walgreen blade is no longer an option could a Home Depot do in a pinch?

I've never tried it myself, but I've heard of other people trying it, and it didn't end well. The scraper blades have a different grind on the edge. They're not as sharp as shaving blades. I put one in a razor once and shaved the hair off my fingers, but I wouldn't try it on my face.

Short answer: NO!

(Longer answer: If and only if those Home Depot blades are designed for shaving--some are, but not many--you might be able to use them. Otherwise, it'll make your face wish that you had never started shaving when you were a teen. If you're not sure, take a pic of the package and post it here, and the guys will give you a yea or nay.)

Walgreen's has not discontinued/stopped selling the Gem blades. Shelf space is, however, valuable and very few people actually shave with SE blades. (Just look at how small the SE subforum is compared to the rest of the B&B.) If you ask them to carry them again they might re-order some, or they can order some for you...or you can order some for yourself.

:)lol:Just don't try eating them...[inside joke, guys])

The mouth heals surprisingly rapidly and iron is an essential mineral in the human diet. I stand by my poor decisions. :mad3: :tongue_sm

Thanks guys
That's pretty much what I figured but I'd thought I'd ask.
Fortunately there's a BB&B with a Harmon's Pharmacy in it nearby and the majority of my traveling is not by air so transporting blades is not a problem.

There was some deal on the bay a week or two ago--a BIN of $3.50 for 5 x 12 CS Treet blades. They raised their prices to $4.95 for the same quantity. They're decent blades, but I really cannot push them very far. I mean, I feel them starting to dull during the course of the first shave on a fresh blade.

Those Personna GEMs are going to last me a bit as an average DE blade is done after 3 days.
I'm done after 5 days with the SE and could have pushed a 6th out it maybe.

I was mainly looking at ease of blade access in the event of air travel as there is usually one or two double edge "for sure" sources at most destinations and was curious as to possible single edge sources now that it looks as though Walgreen no longer stocks them as a regular item.

Do not use the blades you can buy at a hardware store! They are not made for shaving but for scraping. I get mine from EMS and pay about $23 for the coated PTFE blades plus shipping. The uncoated ones go for about $17 plus shipping.

My local Walgreen's also stopped carrying the GEM Personna SS single-edge blades. Fortunately, I'm pretty well stocked up (10 year supply). On the good side, they now carry VdH Luxury soap. It almost looks like they decided to devote just so much space to traditional wet shaving and they couldn't carry both. The RiteAid stores around here seem to carry Treet SE blades and they are meant for shaving (find them in the shaving section). Don't use hardware store SE blades.

I picked up a pack of blades at CVS yesterday for my first SE shave with my newly acquired G-bar and it was simply awful. I'm going to check Walgreens and hopefully they haven't pulled them yet. I'm not going to hold my breath, but never the less be hopeful.

O.K., I just did and online search at Walgreens website and it showed which locations still have them and which don't. Give it a try.
