Scuttles-So Many Varities and Sizes

Hi,
Was just checking out the scuttles.
I have read about the different kinds. The Moss scuttle seems cool.
So far, I have been using soaps, and making my lather in my homemade scuttle.
However, its too small.
My question is about the different sizes.
Which is best?
We have no shortage of water here. Or is it based on the amount of passes, or whether your shaving other body parts?
Or is it based on brush size? Surely they don't differ that much.
I would think, the perfect one, would be able to handle both soaps and cremes, with room to spare, whether the lather is used directly from the scuttle or not, and is the best at keeping the lather hot. One that does it all.
Thanks

There are many factors in choosing the right size scuttle Counter/storage space, your shaving method, price, etc. I have a Dirty Bird 1.5 that is just the right size for me. Its large enough to bowl lather my 28mm PCWoodcrafts but not so big that a 22mm gets lost in it.

I also have a large Robert Becker shaving scuttle that works every bit as well, but its really to big for my counter and cabinet. Also when I'm using a smaller brush it feels under matched by the large bowl. Its as if my lather gets lost and I have to collect it. If I was going to get another I'd pick the medium.

As for a moss scuttle they are really meant for face lathering. The small bowl is next to useless for building lather, but it will keep your brush nice and toasty between passes if you face lather. I have a small Robert Becker on order for this purpose. I'm starting to face lather with soap more and more so my other scuttles get less use as time goes buy. They will keep my brush warm, but sometimes the bristles facing up get a bit cool. The smaller bowl of a moss/small scuttle seems like it would do better at keeping all of the bristles warm.

Another factor is how long you take to shave. Some scuttles (The Georgtowns) dont retain heat as well as some others. There is an EXELENT set of scuttle reviews where one of our members tested heat retention on most of the scuttles currently available. Basiclly most scuttles preformed similarly. Though the Georgtown lookes the prittiest it did loose heat the fastest (though it did well till 15 min and that should be plenty of time for 3 passes). The schwarzweisskeramik scuttles are the most expensive but possibly the most functional and the best at retaining heat. The others wound up preforming very similarly with the Robert Beckers being half the price. The Dirty Bird also has a very nice handle that doubles as a thumb/brush holder. I could only dig up 4 of the 5 links. There is one for the Schwarzeisskeramik thought I could not locate it.

Robert Becker Small
Dirty Bird 1.5
Large Moss
GeorgeTown V5.0

I hope all of that helps out!

Thank you for your input and time.
You offered me some insight and I do appreciate it .
I was just reading about the Moss scuttle and you are correct, it does not seem to be what I am looking for.
I have read the reviews on the scuttle here, and found them to be quite informative. Actually was liking the scuttle, bowl combination, ( but wondering if I would ever use the bowl).
Having bought thousands of dollars online, and reading all the reviews first, I have found a lot of reviews are bias, or not pertaining to my situation or wants, many of the complaints, simply weren't merited. Everyone has opinions and they all seem different.

Living in the tropics, doing 20 minute (3 pass) soap or creme lathers, lathering in the scuttle, size of brush, would factor in to the type of scuttle, that would be right for me.
Hopefully, I will purchase the right one the first time, and not have to resort, to having a scuttle collection or playing lets make a deal online.

I agree wit Loric. If you want to bowl lather, the Dirty Bird 1.5 is hard to beat. I have a green one and it is one of my favorite pieces of shave gear. I also have a large Moss, however, it is best for face-lathering. It is a beautiful and well-made scuttle. I don't have experience with the others.

Here is the link to Schwarzweisskeramik and you can find some of them for sale at Mama Bear's.

Iv'e got an ansgar german panzer model, i think its fantastic but it should be for the price. I hear great things about the DB 1.5 and its probably prudent at half the price.

I've had the Dirty Bird 1.5 model for a few months and I loved it. However, I found that my lather often went overboard, and ended up running down the sides and onto the counter.

So I went ahead and ordered the "German Panzer" (Schwarzweisskeramik XL). Wow, what a beauty! It is roughly the same diameter as the DB 1.5, but a bit deeper. That extra depth seems to make all the difference. Plus I like that bit of standing water in the big spout, I can dip my brush in it if the lather is too dry. Needless to say, I would recommend the German tank, in spite of the price!...

+ 1, Dirty Bird is the only way to go,1.5 size gives you lots of room to work up a super lather !!! Even better the price is right.

+ 1 Dirty Bird 1.5
Ms. Julie made a beautiful scuttle in brown for me. I am surprised how long the bowl retains heat. Must be some magic in her clay.

I bought a GtP v4 because I loved the color and the thing looked very well made. It keeps the lather warm...but not hot in the winter.

Then I bought the cobalt Blue Moss scuttle to try something different and because everyone says it keeps the lather hot. Its nice, but truthfully...I shouldnt have bought it as I dont really need it and I think I like my GtP more.

So...the Moss will eventually go up on the B/S/T whenever I get around to selling it.

Scuttles, like everything else are so YMMV. You really have to try them out to see what you like best!

I have a Georgetown G5. It is one of the aspects of my shave that I refuse to change. It really is an amazing tool. I liked it so much that I ordered a back-up. I am prone to dropping things.

I have a Robert Becker scuttle and I gave one to my son as well. He was kind enough to make them to order with a stopper and color to match our needs.

I am very pleased with my scuttle on all counts. I normally face lather but it will work well as a lather scuttle as well. It holds the heat very well for three and four pass shaves and there is nothing better than warm lather. It is a great hand made product from a great vendor at a great price. I recommend Robert Becker scuttles to all.

Which size did you get Doug ?

thanks

Ours are about 51/2" OD and 41/2 ID. This size works very well for me. I like the stopper and think that it helps to hold the heat a bit longer especially while I soak the brush while I am showering.
