Shortly after I started DE wetshaving last November and roaming around B&B, I saw references to warm lather and scuttles on this board. One of my first AD purchase was a Schwarzweisskeramik scuttle.
For the most part, I've been learning how to DE wetshave with this scuttle. I build my lather in it and finish on my face. I takes a little bit of additional work in the morning to heat up the water in the microwave (because my tap water is not hot enough). But I have really enjoyed it. I easily get three to four passes of warm, luxurious lather. It's not hot, per se, but nice.
This morning, I decided not to bother with scuttle, and instead whipped up some TOBS St. James cream in a beautiful shaving bowl that I bought recently from Straight Razor Design.
Although I got an excellent, irritation-free shave, the shaving experience was not nearly as pleasurable because the lather was room temperature in the first pass and frankly cool by the last pass!
Am I doing something wrong or am I scuttle addicted? Will I always feel like I got a substandard shaving experience if I don't use my scuttle?
For those of you who don't use a scuttle, what do you do -- if anything -- to keep the lather warm through the shave? (By the way, filling my sink with hot water isn't really an option for me because (1) the shape of my sink isn't really conducive to that, and (2) I get very erratic hot water from my tap.)
