Safety Razor Recommendation?

Hey guys, I just registered for an account here after googling and research about this matter; safety razors. However, I am I bit stuck, I want too purchase a safety razor but I'm anticipating getting a cheap $30 from the internet. Is that relatively bad compared to the $200 ones?

Also, keep in mind that I've been shaving for just couple of months with a sensor excel and I've been getting horrible breakouts of ingrown hairs. I don't if has to do with the fact that I'm black (nappy facial hair, I don't even have alot of hair im 18) or I just really suck at shaving. I've been doing all I could possibly think of... shaving with cold water after shower, wet shave in the shower, shaving with the grain, etc and I still ending up screwing it up :/

So at this point, I'm just straight up fed up. So i think its time for me to explore other options for a better shave which is where the safety double edge razors come in. (I really don't want to have to be one to use a hair clipper to shave though.)

I simply want to get off the right start with this, or even moreso, get some advice about what safety razor products to kick if off with. (razor, blades, cream)...

and currently im checking out http://www.classicshaving.com/Safety_Razors.html if theres better deals else where please let me know.

Welcome to B&B

I would recommend this razor in the $30 +/- range

http://connaughtshaving.com/r89rg.html Snazz and pazazz all in one. One of the best manufacturers and one of the nicest looking mild(ish) razors you will find.

If the price is too dear, this is the same razor in a toned down version (straight chrome) http://connaughtshaving.com/mur89.html

Blades I would recommend 100 of these for around $10 delivered

If you need recommendations on brushes and soap/cream shout that out and you will get several

If you have not already done so, stop into the Hall of Fame and tell everyone a little about yourself

Welcome. You can get a new Edwin Jagger DE89L razor for less than $40 new at a number of places like West Coast Shave and Royal Shave. But you can also get great used razors on the BST page on this site, including a nice Gillette TV Special that is or sale right now.

A Gillette flare tip SuperSpeed, if you find one on the Buy/Sell/Trade forum or some other source, should be $20 tops last I looked, possibly less. That is, if you're ok with vintage. If you must have new, a Jagger DE89 is probably the beginner's bang for buck choice.

You'll want a brush and some good shaving cream or soap, and read up on beard prep. Not spray can stuff,
that's just not going to help. Good prep is key.

So some dude recommends for starters. Blades are mysterious.... my guess is you want to try especially the sharper ones by rep. Less tugging that way. Some of the vendors here have samplers. Probably some of us could be convinced to send you some blades too. Don't do Amazon's sampler, you just don't get good variety that way. I'll send you some Gillette 7 o'clock blacks and Personna Reds if you get a razor.... if you want.

I have more than a dozen razors, purchased for as little as $4 ( a Fat Handled Tech ) to nearly $200 ( a Gillette #15 British Aristocrat). I can get an excellent shave with any. My favorites are the $4 Tech and a $70 Weber Bulldog ARC. If you get a vintage Gillette in decent shape, or a well regarded modern razor ( EJ, Merkur, Muhle), you will end up with a well made tool that does its job quite well. Paying top dollar gets you more expensive materials, like stainless steel, which while nice, don't give functional improvements.

Hello and welcome.

I started with a Merkur 180. It has a longer handle which made my transition easier. I also grabbed Wilkinson Sword blades, Van Der Hagan Luxury kit, and Aqua Velva Ice Blue from Walgreens because I was too excited to wait for shipping.

You definitely do not need an expensive razor, as others have indicated. I love vintage razors. But for you, don't take any chances and get yourself a solid entry level razor from Merkur or Muhle. They are all fine amazing well engineered. You have your whole life to become a collector.

Before getting blades, you might want to do some more research on what other men with your beard type use. I'd guess you'd want a fairly sharp bade - at least an Astra. But maybe a GSB, one of the 7'0's, Poly SI, Personna Med Prep. But search around or start a thread.
