Rusty DE razor

Hi all,

Really hope someone can help!

I have a DE razor, a Gillette Superspeed, which has started to develop rust (or looks like rust.. it has orange-y patches) on the inside where you place the blade.

Does anyone have tips on restoring this?

And how can I prevent this happening - other than opening it up after every shave - or is this what is required?

Gillette's are made of plated brass, so there is nothing to rust.

What you are likely seeing is places where the plating has worn off, revealing the underlying base material, which is either brass, or a light coat of copper on top of the brass. Both would be a shade of orange.

It is also possible that you are seeing a light coating of rust on top of the plating, which was left there by an ages old blade that rusted over time, as it was left in the razor. Some light scrubbing with a toothbrush, and Scrubbing Bubbles will usually remove this.

John is right on the money . . . if it is a rust stain from an old blade, a good scrubbing will take care of it. Any remaining tint should come out with MAAS or Simichrome polish.

If it is brassing, though, only replating will cure that. Many good, serviceable "daily shaver" grade razors perform like new but have a spot or two of plating loss!
