Rusty Blades

No, this is not some cutesy play on my B&B name, but rather a question for everyone. Have you ever had a DE blade develop rust?

I live in Atlantic Canada, by the sea and lately we have been gettin high temps and humidex in our summer months, so yes humidity is part of our life.

I have used a wide variety of blades over the years. I generally change my blade every Sunday and leave it in my razor during the week and have never, not even once, developed a speck of rust on my blades. In fact my Father's Gillette Executive was discovered in his bathroom vanity 25 years after he stored it away with blade intact and there was not a speck of rust on the blade or razor. And I often come across antique store razors with blades intact and no rust there either.

Why all the fuss about removing your blade between shaves because of fear of rust?

My wife's Lady Gillette de razor will develop rust on the blades if left in the razor for just a couple of weeks. All of my other razors I've never had any problem with rust even beginning to develop on the blades. I can't explain why just the Lady Gillette causes the blades to rust. Oh well, I just change the blades in my wife's razor once a week & that solves that problem!

I bought a TSA confiscated Gillette Red Tip. The blade left inside by the previous owner, a Personna, definitely had rust and dried up soap and hair on it. It confirmed for me my habit of breaking down my razors after every shave for a cleaning to be a good one.

Cut yourself with Rusty Blade risk Tinnitus.

Oh yes, that rings a bell… 👂🦻

I used to lived for 34 years in a hot, humid environment, less that 1/4 mile from the sea, where summer temperatures routinely reached 44ºC/110ºF and I never had any issues with either stainless or platinum DE blades, although I once had a root canal 🦷.

Carbon steel straight razors needed some care, of course, but that’s what Ballistol is for.

Um, I think you mean Tetanus. Tinnitus is ringing in the ears. :)
Indeed. Also, tetanus is actually found in soil that is deep enough to avoid oxygen exposure, and not on rusty metal. It usually comes from punctures because scrapes and cuts are exposed to too much oxygen for it to cause infection.

The myth that it inhabits rust is because a common means of infection is unearthing and then stepping on a board with a rusty nail in it. They give out TDAP shots whenever you get cut as a regular vaccine and as a placebo to make you feel like they did something about your recent cut.

The biggest risk with razors is probably hepatitis from sharing them.

I use Rapira Platinum Lux for a week, daily shaving and at the end of the week there is some rust on it.
I don't really clean the blade after shaving, just rinse the razor with the handle a few turns loose.
The rust is not on the edges so i don't worry about health risks.

While the blades are packed they are in oil and won't develop rust.
The rust is not in form of specks, there forms a thin brown layer all over the blade (which sticks to the razor also) and easily can wiped of.

You bought a TSA confiscated Red Tip? So those jerks at the airport stole a nice razor from some poor schmo then turned around and sold it? No offense to you, you did liberate it from TSA’s clutches and all, but something about it bothers me
