Since I've started DE shaving, I've used a Merkur 1904 open comb. Last week I treated myself to a '63 ball end tech. I guess I could chalk it up to needing to adjust my technique between the two, but I'm really hacking the crap out of my face with the gilette, and not with the open comb merkur. Strange, no?

No, not strange. Each razor requires some adjustment to technique, and maybe your Tech might like a different blade better. While I didn't hack my face up the first time I used a open comb, I did manage to heat it up a bit... Got the "Home Alone" thing going with the aftershave! The open comb just needed a different touch...

Did you maybe unconsciously change your technique to compensate for thinking you'd be getting a less aggressive shave?
Sometimes the Techs take a little getting used to.
