Rotation??

I see that most people use a "rotation" of shaving gear. I'm wondering how most use a rotation. Do you rotate razor, blade, soap, and brush all at once? Do you use the same razor, blade, & brush for a several days and rotate the soap for one, two, three or more days? Then keep the other variables the same & rotate razors? It seems like if I rotate everything at once and happen to get a better shave, I won't know which "component" has improved the shave.

Any thoughts?

You are correct that if you are relatively new to wetshaving, and keep rotating its a bad thing. Most graybeards on the site recommend sticking to one razor, one blade, one soap and one aftershave for a few weeks to get the hang of it. Then, after that, they recommend just changing one variable at a time after that.

After having experimented off and on over the years, I've found that I can rotate razors, soaps and aftershaves and still get good shaves. I know what works for me and my face. That said, if I'm going to change a significant variable (razor blades for me are significant), I'll stop rotating all the other products, and focus on just the blade for a week to see how it works.

I try and keep to one razor / one blade for a weeks time. During that time I switch out the soaps / creams / as's on a daily basis.

Razors weekly, new blade in next razor Friday night, clean outgoing razor.
Saturday first shave with new blade, new razor.

Soaps / creams change is on a "whatever strikes my fancy" kind of thing.

Not that I like having my fancy struck.

It's all my interpretation of the best of the best as defined what works for me as opposed to what doesn't work so well. I switch off among the products every so often depending on what mood I'm in that day. I have found that to be a very pleasant and efficient way to maintain a wide variety of excellent shaving experiences.

I try to stick with the same combination for at least a week or so. Whenever I change something it always takes me a couple of shaves to get back into the swing of using that particular bit of gear, so if I were rotating more frequently I wouldn't be getting as much out of it.

I do all of the above. My decision of which selection of shaving gear to use happens when I start to gather the gear for the shave.

Starting out, you'll want to keep the variables down. Be consistent with which cream or soap you lather and brush you use until you get that down. Then start changing out different razor and blade combos.

I don't rotate to find a better shave; I spent a lot of time trying different things to zero in on that. I use the same razor every day, changing blades twice a week. M-Th I bowl lather with a big brush, F-Sun I face lather with a smaller brush. I do rotate through several creams, whatever I fancy on a given day.

Although I am new here my thought was to use one razor and I have been bouncing back and fourth with the creams and soaps.

Its amazing how different the shave can be with one to another.

I am getting a much smoother cream and shave with the TABAC shave cream verses the "el cheapo" soap that I started with from the drug store.

Shaving is always better with Tabac!

My current shave den is pretty small in comparison to some of the people on this site so it makes rotating things pretty easy. I usually pick whatever I feel like using that morning.

That pretty well sums up what I do most of the time now that I've pretty much settled on a couple of blades to use...

I experiment with different razors every so often, but I generally shave with the same razor, blade and cream.

Aftershaves rotate depending on my mood.

I rotate everything depending on my mood

+1 To me rotation is all about my mood and what suits me that day. I tend to use certain blades in certain razors but outside of that I rotate Brushes, Soaps, Creams, AS, ASB, EDT etc. based on how I feel!

Graybeards! Classic! Although I'm proud to say I don't have a single gray anywhere, although I'm only 34.

As if you don't have enough posts already. I keep a few old Gillettes of different year models lying around and run through them according to taste. I keep a really nice EJ 25mm brush for the weekend when I want to pamper (did I as a guy say that word?) myself and reserve one of my best razors just for the weekend treat. Shaving is one of the few things in life you can get that variation out of for relatively little cost. bc
