Finding Shaving Gear (US)

Welcome to B&B. You've definitely stepped into the right place for information, opinions and the opportunity to sign on to be part of a PIF. This opens the possibility to try something you might not have considered: no guarantees there of course.

A very solid soap company that offers the ability to score samples is Stirling. I use one of their unscented soap and it works quite well. Stirling has pretty comprehensive descriptions of how their soaps smell. One nice thing about sample sized soaps is these are relatively inexpensive, you get to try small before you commit and unless you absolutely hate it, you can keep it in your rotation and use it up quickly enough.

As mentioned, blade sample packs are a very smart approach to finding blades you enjoy. Blade/razor pairing also makes having a sample of blades in the den a smart thing. As many here have experienced, a so-so blade in one razor may change to a be a good blade in a different razor because of the geometry of the razor.

Welcome again. Glad you're here.

It really would help us to help you if we knew where you live. Living in Michigan we have 2 (The Razor Company and Maggards) very good wet shaving retailers. Both offer a wide selection of soap and splash samples along with a lot of other shaving items.

One of the best ways I’ve found to buy razors and brushes is from companies that have had models out for years and not just months. Those models have passed the test of time.
Southwest Virginia. Near Blacksburg, Christiansburg, Roanoke.
Go Hokies!

PS---I am mainly interested in places that I could walk in and physically see and smell what's available. I've ordered some soaps from online and didn't care for the scent once they arrived. Online is probably my only choice though and putting together a PIF from the items I didn't like may be an option.

PSS---I have found CREMO tubes locally. And the CVS stores do have the Goodline razors but that is all I've found so far.
I've avoided the local mall so far. This isn't the best time of year to go browsing unless you like crowds.:c2:

I don’t know of any retailers in your area, but someone else might. My best suggestion would be to read as much as you can about the many different offerings, and then make a list from a number of different makers that sound interesting. From that list I would order samples to try.
Good luck.

Amazon! I've bought quite a bit of shaving supplies off there, plus a few shaving knots and a brush.

Yesterday I bought some Astro blades as I was running low.
There is a lot of junk on Amazon. A lot of it uncompetitive on price, like $30 private label Weishis and melt and pour glycerin soaps. A lot of it is specifically positioned to sort of dupe inexperienced buyers into jumping at it. Look at the top blades and razors on there like Viking Revolution and Facon. Overpriced or junk.

I have bought stuff from Amazon but there again, some of it I don't like.
I was just curious if there were "brick and mortar" stores that I could see and smell the products ahead of purchase.
Thanks though

I can occasionally find blades at Walmart or the drug store, but it’d maybe 1/10 stores. Rare enough that whenever I see it, I buy a pack of 10 blades regardless just to encourage the store to keep stocking it.
