Roll call: Durham (the triangle), NC

So, who calls this area home? I've been here for about a year. Thought I would be getting a little relief from the FL heat/humidity moving up here. Boy, was I wrong. Damn you, Al Gore. Damn you! JK!

Not in the triangle, but about an hour west of you. Piedmont Triad area .

Yeah I moved here from South Florida.. just as hot.. just as humid

Hey and welcome to the Triangle! There's quite a few of us around. I, too am in Durham, as is JPDyson, and none other than The Nid Hog himself :ouch1: is just down 15-501 a few miles. Speaking of famous Tarheel B&B-ers, if you head west on I-40 for 30 or so miles, you'll run into Swampfox (doing time where there's no shaving supplies to be had!). You might have heard of Swampfox: he's recently celebrated his one year B&B anniversary.:lol::lol:

Have you stopped by the NC social group yet? There's lots of great info on local B&M shaving supply shops. I thought I knew what there was to be had locally, but I hadn't even begun to scratch the surface!

(Oh, and the difference between NC and FL is that we occasionally have this thing they call winter - I hear it's just a northern import, though!)

My son is in school down there and my wife and I were there Friday through Sunday, just passed.

Amazing inexpensive shaving-type materials down there, if you know where to go--thank you, The Nid Hog. Some great food!

If it is like it was over the weekend, it near a balmly New England right now, especially compared to the DMV. Last year when I was down there about this time it was mind destroying hot and humid!

I'm here in Apex. We have been here for 18 years. This summer has been extraordinarily hot. It gets hot here, but this year has been special. Winters are pretty painless unless we get ice but even that only lasts a few days. I love it here, just a really nice place. Welcome to the area!!

i like it here a lot too. have one more year in school then i have no idea where i'll end up. preferably somewhere cool year round....i.e. seattle, portland. ive lived my entire life in the south but have never gotten accustomed to the humidity. messes up what little hair i have left

Fear not, you will, you will!!

To join the NC group, click the "Community" tab at the top of your page, then click "Social Gropus" and search for "North Carolina". Easy and simple, and if you join there are no dues to pay or arcane initiation rituals.:thumbup1: Check out the thread entitled "Northern, Southern and Central North Carolina "Where to Buy" thread" for all of the particulars on the local wetshaving scene.

There are quite a few little secret shaving spots throughout the Triangle, and a surprising number of them right here in Durham. Check out Morgan Imports (in downtown) for Omega brushes and shave cream, and Around The World Market (on NC 54 just west of the NC 55 intersection in the south part of town) carries all 3 scents of Godrej cream as well as Dettol cream for $3 apiece, Hero alum blocks for $0.99, and an ever-varying selection of DE blades as well as various Indian toiletries (though, sadly, no Indian Old Spice stuff), all at very good prices. On the north side of town there's Beauty World, a great barber/beauty supply place that stocks the full range of Pinaud, Masters, Lustray etc. splashes as well as other barbershop supplies.

If you want to travel some there's Opulence of Cary, which stocks the Proraso, Musgo, Edwin Jagger and Castle Forbes lines, and they even have a limited stock of straights and DE razors as well. If you haven't been there yet, drive west on I-40 to Burlington and visit JR Cigars for lots of aftershave and cologne choices (Tabac included!) at very good prices. All in all, it's a pretty good area to be a wet shaver.:001_smile

Ugh. I'm a native Floridian as well and had the misfortune to end up in eastern NC. Not only are there actual winters here, but the heat is somehow WORSE!

I'm glad there are some nice things further inland. I guess I won't write this state off yet.

My first visit to the the state many years ago was over where you probably are. I swore then that I would never return. Now I live in the Triangle--and I actually like it. Give it a chance.

thanks everyone.

I spent some time last semester in Goldsboro and the semester before that, Fayetteville. Fayetteville has to be the worst place I've ever been. Where exactly are you?

thanks again for the tip. i went by around the world today and picked up a pack of sword blades. for 1.99 i figured i'd give it a shot. also picked up a tube of godrej lime cream. it smelled the best to me. haha. saw the alum blocks but they looked pretty suspicious. besides, not really sure what the alum blocks do. cool little market. very nice staff. probably gonna go to opulence in cary tomorrow to look for my uncle a safety razor. his old one broke.

Glad to hear that you're out and exploring! The Wilkies didn't do it for me (at $0.40 a blade I expect a lot, and I hear that Walmart is beginning to stock Wilkinson DE blades now, though I haven't seen any locally), but in the past they've stocked the Gillette black 7 O'Clocks and Treet Durasharps. I haven't tried the 7 O'Clocks, but liked the Treets quite a bit - they're not extra-sharp, but they sure were smooth.

Congrats on scoring some Godrej. All of their creams are quite good, and definitely "punch above their weight". You won't be disappointed, I'm sure.

Have a great time over at Opulence, don't spend too much cash:lol:, and make sure to tell the staff there that you heard about them at B&B.

Jacksonville. I'm not surprised that the two biggest military towns have the worst reputations.

I guess it's not really fair to judge NC based on this place. When I have a bit more leisure time and opportunity to travel I'll probably check out the Raleigh area. I'm not a big traveler, but if I miss out on a good place to settle because of my time on the east coast, I'll be pretty angry with myself!

It took me a few days, but I found this thread! Muhahahahahaha!!!!!!

Apex, Climax and High Point.....I think someone got mad at someone and started three separate towns.

You brought the curse on yourself. I cannot help what happens from here....

Lived in NC my whole life - born in Greensboro, lived in Raleigh from 3-18, went to school in Greenville, now working in RTP and living in Durham. Sprinkle in a couple of Wilmington summers. I've hardly known anything else, but I do love this place.

I've lived in NC most of my life. Mostly in the Piedmont, but spent a nice year up in Asheville. Not quite in the Triangle now; east side of Greensboro and work some in Burlington..

I've been in the Piedmont for the last 7 years. I grew up in the South Carolina Pee Dee around Florence. I really like this area though, and moved to Greensboro in April.

thanks everyone.

That's one of the reasons (of coarse not the main one) they call it Fayettenam.
I am close to Charlotte. Right across the Catawba river in Gaston County. Fish Camps galore. Ate at Catfish Cove tonight. Salt & Pepper catfish, Whole flounder. Tasty:drool:

With a name like Snappy Lunch, I figures you were holed up in the Sauratown Mountains.

Hey guys, I've been lurking around these boards for a while and finally decided to join in. I'm a Raleigh native living in Durham now and actually liking it more than Raleigh. It's less pretentious and has more creative energy, which is important for a marketing guy like me.

Speaking of business, I'd like to solicit everyone's opinion on opening up a store in Durham. I noticed that there is no store which specifically serves us wet shavers in the Durham area. I also noticed that the only tobacco shop in Durham is at Southpoint, which I don't even consider Durham -- Southpoint is an extension of Chapel Hill.

It comes down to having to go to the mall to get shave cream at Sephora and pipe tobacco from Tinder Box. Not that I dislike Tinder Box, but there are few things less manly than having to get quintessential man things from a mall dominated with stores and advertising for women.

So, I'm considering opening up a store that sells wet shave supplies and fine tobacco. I would stock all kinds of DE blades, safety razors, straightedges, creams, brushes and similar supplies. Also, I would have cigars, pipes, and blend my own pipe tobaccos. It would be a retail storefront with lots of dark wood and leather inside.

If this store were located in downtown Durham and had adequate parking (no pay lots or parking meters), how likely would you be to patronize it?
