Recommendations for the next level

So, I used to frequent here a few years ago. Back then I was a clean shaven married guy. Now I'm a tat'd, goatee sporting divorced guy. Lately I've been wanting to stop the whole gruff looking goatee thing to a clean shaven goatee. I really like the goatee, I just want to present a cleaner look at work and not the constant stubble, which was so cool and edgy immediately after the divorce.

So, I've only used Proraso and Tom's of Maine mint and two Mama Bear soaps (lime and rosemary mint), due mostly to financial issues with the ex spending my money on her love life, I couldn't get any of the nicer creams, especially after laying out the initial cash for a brush and DE razor... Anyway... Now that I don't have that restriction, I'm looking to jump back into shaving. I shave in the shower, and I've been doing the whole lather on the face bit, which works, but burns through the cream pretty quick (good thing I only shave once or twice a month). I'm looking to get a nicer cream (soaps alone just don't agree with my skin its far too sensitive, but I love loading my brush up with soap before lathering on the cream makes a much richer lather). Any suggestions on some other creams to try out for a guy with extremely sensitive skin and 8 gauge wires instead of facial hair for around $30 + shipping...more or less?

Almost every cream you could get will fit within your budget. At St Charles Shave you could get several and still have change, and Sue's creams are excellent, some of the best I've used! I like the Almond and the Unscented for my sensitive skin.

I recommend Kiss My Face Fragance Free. You can get it in a container with a pump, and it be can used with or without a brush, which would make it suitable for shaving in the shower. An even better cream is J.M. Fraser's. It costs about $12 for a 16 oz. tub. The cream softens the beard quite well and it should be okay for sensitive skin.

Welcome back to the neighborhood. Some of the neighbors have moved but the hood is still pretty much the same as when I moved in. I know this may not be exotic but one of my favorite creams is from Crabtree and Evelyn. An excelent lather, nice cusion and glide, and prolific. Can be had quite reasonably especially during sales.

Here is a selection of shaving creams that should work well for you:

Taylors Avocado, Rose, Lavender and Mr Taylors;
Trumpers Coconut Oil and Rose;
Truefitt & Hill Ultimate Comfort and 1805.

How exciting!

You can try just about any cream for that price. I suggest the following:

Nancy Boy
Trumper Lime, Almond or Coconut
Proraso (of course!)
Speick
TOBS Avocado
Castle Forbes Lime and Lavender (travel size is about $17, and they last forever)

For soap, may I suggest Institute Karit for sensitive skin. I really like it and have used it with a tiny bit of cream leftover from my Trumper samples.

BTW, I would also suggest the Trumper sampler. For about $6 shipped, you'll get some amazing samples of cream, skin food, and cologne.

since you mention that your beard is tough, i'd suggest JM frasier. it works well and is pretty inexpensive. it's also slick as hell.

another solid choice would be a TOBS, either avocado or jeremyn street, their sensitive formula. both lather like mad and make great lather. they're also affordable at about $15

a guy with extremely sensitive skin and 8 gauge wires instead of facial hair ...

Friend, that's my mug exactly! And worse during the dry mountain winters here.

Excellent suggestions by the forum above. Here're my votes:

(1) La Toja "sensitive" cream (avail. at Superlather.com). Not cheap at $14 a large tube, but truly world class for baby-face-brillo-beards.

(2) Erasmic cream, available at several of our fine vendors.

(3) JM Fraser cream. I've only tried the original and "oriental spice" but both are damn near theraputic grade, shave great and smell real nice.

May I also suggest an aftershave balm from Saint Charles Shave?: "Avocado Oil" AS balm. It's my go-to, especially after those treacherous shaves.

Even if I didn't like the scent, Musgo provide great lather. Proraso yes. Omega if you want something a bit milder than Proraso.
