Recommend shaving bowls?

My hot, wet shaving process is almost complete.

1. I start with a shaving brush warmer/hydrator— Vulfix shaving mug (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B003B402RI/ref=oh_details_o01_s00_i00?ie=UTF8&psc=1)

2. Hot shower

3. Then I oil — Art of Shaving pre-shave oil (http://www.amazon.com/Pre-Shave-Oil...1377262004&sr=1-2&keywords=Art+of+shaving+oil)

4. Then soap up the brush — http://www.amazon.com/The-Art-Shavi...377262059&sr=1-1&keywords=art+of+shaving+bowl

I need two things for the next step:

5. A bowl to lather up the soap. I tried Art of Shaving and the Grooming Lounge and what I found seemed too small — http://www.groominglounge.com/shavingaccessories/grooming-lounge-porcelain-shaving-bowl.html — http://www.groominglounge.com/shavingaccessories/grooming-lounge-br-chrome-shaving-bowl.html — I need something with a little more room to swish around in. I like the look of this — http://www.amazon.com/Buffalo-Shave...d=1377262258&sr=8-10&keywords=shaving+scuttle — but it also seems small

6. A bowl for hot water to rinse/dip my razor between strokes — This should be a little bigger — I wonder should I use just any old porcelain bowl?

So can anyone help me with steps 5 and 6?

5. I use a miso soup bowl or rice bowl I picked up at a thrift store:

For travel I found Target had dip bowls about the same size 2 for .99

As for #6 why not use the sink?

I hope this is OK to actually use a web site from a particular store? I keep all of my soaps in a mini round covered casserole dish by Misto from Bed Bath and Beyond. I bought a couple of cases of the discontinued brown color for 99¢ each. Most pucks fit perfectly. I like these because I face lather and it helps me build a lather and then move the brush to my face. They have a lid so the fragrance stays in the soap and the soap stays clean. They don’t have the brown color but here is a sample of the item in white. They may have it some other colors but I am not sure. Here it is in white: http://www.bedbathandbeyond.com/store/product/misto-linen-mini-round-covered-casserole-dish/1017642766?poc=108431

I hope this helps. David

Hihihihihi, heard that so many times.

...I need two things for the next step...
We know, we know well the need. Truth is, and it has been mentioned here, you already have everything you need for a good shave.

5. A bowl to lather up the soap....
In my experience it should be anywhere between 4" and 5". I used a 5" bowl and it was perfect. I have seen people using a Salsa dish from Walmart that looks interesting and it seems to fit your needs.
Any bowl will do but, in my case, it should meet some basic criteria: straight walls, shallower at around 2" tall, 2.5" at the most, good heat retention, tall bottom with a ridge to grab on or squeeze against. Oh, almost forgot, it needs a bit of character.
I presently use a double wall stainless bowl that meets most of the above. It does not have a good bottom to grab on, but has other treats that makes it good for lathering (heat retention, straight wall and a bulge that keeps lather inside)

...6. A bowl for hot water to rinse/dip my razor between strokes — This should be a little bigger — I wonder should I use just any old porcelain bowl?...
You already have it. People on this forum call it a sink.

I did my best.

For #5 (or #6 when face lathering), I use a blue anchor hocking bowl from walmart. It's about the size of the miso bowl above. It was 1.00. I have been thinking about getting the matching blue mug, except its a bit tall.

I shave in the shower, where there is no sink. Question No. 6 from the OP is therefore a very relevant question for anyone who shaves there doesn't care to waste water and rinse the razor under the shower head / wand :tongue_sm

I use, of all things, a Brylcreem cap (that's the 'tub' Brylcreem). It works quite well and no worries of broken glass in the shower!

If you want a stylish, functional shaving bowl and don't want to spend 20-50 dollars, go to a local neighborhood Asian Market. They usually sell miso soup bowls which are just the right size, weight, and feel for 5 bucks.

Paying 20 dollars for a bowl is like spending 6 dollars for a Mach 3 cartridge. It doesn't make much sense really.

Thanks for all the suggestions! I know I'm over thinking it a bit, but when I acquire a new interest I kind of geek out.

I don't consider sinks to be hygienic. I'd rather have something separate that I wash regularly.

The "A bowl for hot water to rinse/dip my razor between strokes" is irrelevant since one cannot properly rinse a razor in a bowl, unless one takes the chance of banging the razor against the bowl. In my very limited experience you can properly rinse a safety razor in the sink, under the tap or shower. Straight razors can be cleaned on a cloth/sponge/rubber cup.
If you don't care about your razor, your bowl or making annoying banging noises during your shave, by all means get a bowl.

I read the OP and I believe acsenray shaves by the sink. Unless he has a shelf in the shower where he keeps all the gear plus three bowls. I might be wrong.

Sinks can/should be cleaned regularly, unless sink is in a public washroom. I also consider public washroom not hygienic. My sink at home is as clean as any of my bowls.

I use either the ceramic bowls on westcoastshaving (Colonel Conk; the blue 2 toned one they sell looks nice but is out of stock) or a $5 wood grain miso soup bowl. Amazon ships miso soup bowls to your door.

Well, my sink doesn't fit in the dishwasher, so it's never going to be as clean as a bowl. And studies show that sinks have more microbic critters than toilet seats do.

Maybe I'll ask my wife to make a ceramic bowl to my specifications.

But as for fitting all these things in the bathroom ... Next project ... Wash stand!

You're kidding right? Are you Howie from deal or no deal? Get some soap and clean it out. Are you afraid of a little dirt? Your mouth is the most disgusting thing bacteria wise, so I'm sure you'll be ok. It might be different if you heard people getting sick all the time from rising their razor in the sink, but it doesn't happen.

I'm over the sink thing. My plan lets me get more gadgets.
