Real Horn Handles At Shavemac

Just noticed this post in the Vendor forum and snagged a Shavemac Silvertip in real horn - first time I've seen these at Shavemac since I've been a customer. All the Silvertip grades are available and the best part is you choose your exact brush from the photos. Unfortunately I just ordered a couple of other Shavemacs before these came out. Nasty SBAD. What can you do huh?

Already ordered these 2 - very identical looking brushes in the soft 3-Band Silvertip.

Next up is a 234 Cocobolo wood in D01 3-Band. Already been bitten by my D01 2-bander (still a nice scrubby brush though - I'm quite flexible when it comes to brushes..... )

I ordered one of the D01 3-bands. That may be my favorite hair of all the brushes I own. I also like the fact that when you order a Shavemac you know exactly what you're getting; their knots are very consistent. The "charm" of the brush lottery the Brits have been running has worn off over the years; they make some fabulous brushes, you just never know if one of those will show up in your mailbox.

Like German, I too ordered a 24mm Silvertip. Had a D01 order in too but decided against it since I have a custom D01 3 band set how I want it already. If only there was a 24mm 2 band, I'd have ordered that too!

ETA: Damn... Now that I'm looking at those 2 Bands, I'm really considering that since I got rid of my other D01 2 bands. How do the D01 2-bands perform set at 43mm's as they're being offered? Are they soft or extremely scritchy?

I ordered one of the 24mm silvertips...

Got one coming too, 21mm D01 2 Band. My most expensive brush so far.

I ordered a 21mm regular Silvertip so it looks like we have it covered!

Don't have it yet. So far, I only have a 24/46 D01 2-Band. It does have some scritch, but it is a luxurious bush! It loads and fans out nicely when loaded.

Oh I know you don't have it yet. ;) I was just speculating as to what the knot might feel like or what you're expecting of a brush with that short of a loft and that small of a knot.

Shavemac 2 band is not for me... Too scritchy... YMMV
How do you feel about the loft being 43mm? I've never felt a 21mm D01 2-band. I'm highly considering adding one of these to my order but, I'm unsure about the loft. I'm worried it might be too scritchy.

Been eying the Shavemac shop at increasing frequency the last few weeks... don't know how long I can still hold out. I don't need another brush, now... :001_unsur :whistling:

If you are nervous about the scritch, it will probably be too scritchy for you. Although I've read posts from members characterizing the D01 2 as incredibly soft, I think those people don't mind scritch in general.

I owned a 22/44 for a couple of weeks and although I loved the density and scrubbiness it was too prickly for my face. At the time I didn't like too soft (Thater 3 band for example) but I didn't like more scritch than an M and F Blonde.

German, you and I have the same taste so your word is good enough for me. I shall steer clear.

Thanks for the comparison! I'll stick with 3 bands in my Shavemacs.

I still haven't found my perfect brush quite yet, so I'm testing different sizes, hair and so on. I have a 19/44 New Forest and like it quite a bit, the aforementioned 24/46 is already a bit on the large side for me. So just curious to try out new brushes. I'll have to try their silvertip too after all the good reviews it gets, D01 or not? Choices...

I would start with their regular Silvertip before trying the D01. The D01 hair is great but I think the regular Silvertip is unique in its character - it just performs really well.

Are the two different hair types? I had assumed the D01 would just be packed more dense.

Horn handles look great but they do not keep their luster very long. I apply Neetsfoot oil periodically and have also tried Renaissance wax. Horn is a natural material that will dry out and can crack. I haven't had any problems and my horn brushes are about three years old. It's just something you need to know when thinking about buying a brush with a horn handle. I. 'Ve never been able to maintain a high polish for very long.
