re-plateting

If I take a razor in to be replated what should I ask for??? What metal is usually used I've a fat handled tech needing replating on both handle and head??
also what should I do to prep it??? Does anyone have a ballpark on cost???

I've had other things replated, but never a razor. Buddydog, who is a member here, does replating and said in a post that he charges $30. (that might have been for gold plating).

The platers I've dealt with have their own prep method. They recommend just cleaning the obvious surface dirt from the piece.

You can have it plated with whatever you want. The most common plating material for razors is nickel and that's what was on your razor originally. You could have it gold plated but it's not as durable. Silver plate tarnishes. Rhodium is great, but expensive.

What he said......

I charge $20 plus postage. No need to polish the razor as I chemically strip old nickel, polish and then finally plate in bright nickel. I don't plate for profit, only to fund cost of chemicals to plate my own razors.

Here are some razors stripped and polished:

Hi Christian,

I'm afraid it wouldn't last long if not plated, the copper and brass would tarnish within days especially when in contact with soap and water etc. You'll end up with a green look :)

This is the reason for the nickel, silver, gold plating etc.

HECK, how much just to strip and polish? That two-tone rose/brass is a really interesting look!

Does anybody have any idea what it would take just to replate the silo doors for an otherwise minty gold (Fat Boy Style D-3) Executive? Hints for finding such a service locally, the Yellow Pages under Plating are talking about manifolds & such. Thanks gents

I've read somewhere about jewelers doing it?

Great results and nice prices.

How much do brighteners matter for the result? Been thinking of trying it in our lab:redface:

Can't do gold though:frown:

Brighteners give more of a chrome look and more in fitting with the original Gillette plating. Without brighteners you get a duller finish that can be polished though.

If it;s just the doors that need the gold retouching I'd go for brush plating.

You can buy a kit and chemicals on Ebay for around $50 and do it yourself.

My bet is: If it's done right,, re-plating would make your super-speed function noticibly better.....

My understanding is that re-plating will not negatively effect performance at all. Gillette actually assembled then plated when they were originally made and the tolerances take that into consideration.

Replating a super speed does not interfere with the operation, the tolerances are wider than the plating thickness. I was very fortunate to find a facility here in Mass. nearby where the owner does restoration work and was willing to undertake gold and nickel plating for a reasonable price. That is not easy to come by so my suggestion to you is have buddydog there undertake your work, he is located in the US, the shipping isn't much and his work looks every bit as good as the professional facility I have use of near me. I have replated quite a few superspeed and take aparts and I enjoy shaving with a nice bright razor, the cost is minimal for something you use often and can keep for a long time. bc

Wow those are some great looking pics! How long will a replate last in theory compared to the originals (which seem to hold up quite well with decent care)? Do the internals of these gillettes ever break down or require any actual preventive maintenance?
