RAD pinging - should a 1940's style Super Speed be on my radar?

I thought I was pretty settled with my current razors but then RAD started pinging again. I'd pared my "collection" down to a Fatboy, a Slim and a Merkur slant. (I shave with my Fatboy set on 7 and my Slim set on 8.) Then I started reading all the positive things about the 1940's style Super Speed. I really like the look of the razor but from what I've read, it is a mild razor. As you can see from my razors above, I like them on the relatively aggressive side of the scale. Does the 40's Super Speed rise above its reputation as a mild razor that it could compete with my razors above or is it likely that I'd find it too mild to be worth my while? I'd appreciate your thoughts yea or nay.

Compared to your other razors I think a 40's style SS would be too mild. I really like the smooth shave mine gives but it is very mild in my opinion. I'll be curious to see other's thoughts.

I have a Merkur 23c and just purchased a late 40's Milord (gold plated SS). IMO it is extremely mild compared to the Merk (my first and only razor till the Milord) I never used a slant. I wish I would have gotten the SS/Milord as my first razor to learn with. It is also lighter than the Merk. It does provide a DFS, though mild.

I started out with a 40's style super-speed, eventually got a slim and a merkur slant like you did, and I haven't shaved with the SS since haha. I still love having one because like you said its a good looking razor, and there is just something about collecting vintage razors that I find enjoyable, but it doesn't get a lot of actual use from me.

The 40s Super Speed is fairly mild. It will certainly give a close shave with a little extra work, perhaps another pass and some extra cleanup in spots.

I'm sorry to hear the reports. Like I said, I dig the look but it sounds like I'd probably end up disappointed in it.

Great razors.

I have one that was my grandpa's.

It was the first razor I snuck and shaved with when I was 12 years old.

I shave with it once in a while out of sheer nostalgia, but it is too mild for me to want to use it every day.

The 40's style Super Speed is one of my favorite razors, but since you prefer more aggressive razors I would recommend a Red Tip Super Speed instead.

Thanks for the recommendation. I wish the red tip SS aggressiveness was built into a 40's style SS look, I'd probably give it a go. Something about the flare tip doesn't work for me, I never liked the look.

If you don't already have one, a Rocket HD might be just the thing to look for. Pretty similar to the 40s SS in looks and a bit more bite.

Thanks for the tip on the Rocket. Unfortunately, it looks like the Rocket is demanding prices higher than I'd be willing to pay for another razor. I'll just have to tamp down that RAD and be happy with my Slim, Fatboy and slant.
