R.I.P. Gourmet Magazine

If you hadn't heard, Conde Nast has dropped publication of Gourmet magazine. The apparent reason is not enough companies advertising in it. As I understand it, November's issue which I just received is the last issue to be published. And, I suspect, I will not get a refund for my remaining subscription time. It was not a magazine from which I tried many recipes, but found it good for inspiring things to try.

I heard about that the other day. Rachel Ray was on Neil Cavuto and had mentioned it. I never subscribed but would buy a copy on occasion.

I took it for a couple years and like the "travelogue" aspect of its coverage. I ended up quitting, though. Its a shame to hear that its folded.

While this is unfortunate, it's pretty much a sign of the times.
There is nothing to be found in a magazine that can't be found online, often free, with less advertising and more convenient (i.e. wanting to show a friend an article, but the magazine is at home and you're not).

I think printed magazines will become a niche market where few people will end up paying a premium to do something in an old fashoned way... Kind of like, ummm, I know there's something that reminds me of this... (asside from the premium, for now)

It's too bad, magazines can be great but I think more and more people are getting hesitant to pay for something that is essentially 50% advertising.

If it wasn't for the advertising then the magazines would be priced higher, much, much, higher. We don't really buy the ads.

That is really disappointing. While I did not always pick Gourmet magazine up, I always made a point of picking up the Thanksgiving issue, as I always found something good to try. I have tried a number of recipes and have not been disapointed.

This is a real loss to cooking enthusiasts. Some of their recipes were a bit too complicated, but I always learned something trying, or reading, them.

Very true, but then they came for my daily newspaper, I can't spread a desktop out on the kitchen sink & munch toast .. sad, I am still paying the same amount for the Freep, but it comes to me house only 3 days a week, thin. I will be the first to vote off electronic media, oh, wait, the I get cut off?

I saw on their website you will receive Bon Appetit for the remainder of your Gourmet subscription.

This is not good news.

I let my subscription to Bon Appetit expire last year because I didn't read it, I renewed my Gourmet subscription instead.
