What's new

Quick and dirty pic

Hi guys,

It's weekend and I had an hour of free time today, so i took my tools and whipped out a simple homemade strop from some scraps leathers which I have lying around my workshop. Took a quick and dirty iPhone pic of it with the rest of my shaving gears which includes sight half seen razor/ brush from Whipped Dog and also a pewter soap bowl (courtesy of my dear wife). Maybe I'll try and take a proper pic of the gear later. Till then, enjoy your weekend!

Thanks guys...usually I do watch straps and other small leather items. Since I'm new with stropping and this is my first strop (BTW I'm using suede leather for this one), what's the best kind of leather for a good strop? Any specific ones?

As you've probably figured by the responses, the possibilities are endless and ... maybe mystical...

I've made great strops for friends and myself from cow leather from Tandy Leather. If you are not looking for something exotic and want to experiment for the first few, just select a good strip from their stock of 2.5 or 3" material. It pays to be picky because some of it has flaws you probably don't want. I usually treat it with a prepping oil - like neatsfoot oil - the last strips I got were just a tad dry. In any case, it works fine. Is it the best? Uh... sure... ;-}
