Question of "Advertised" Loft

Sort of shopping the net looking at a Simpson brush - the Commodore X2 specifically. What I have noticed is that at least three different purveyors list three different loft heights for the "same" brush. Am curious as to why. Should one suspect that each of them orders the Commodore from Simpson with different lofts? Do they each measure what they get from Simpson and individually pick a loft height to advertise, recognizing that there will be some variation in manufacturing? And when one wants to buy a brush, would it be reasonable to request that purveyor to measure for the loft you wish from among the stock on hand? Thanks for opinions /facts on the question.

One, the brushes are handmade, so the lofts will in fact vary from brush to brush, though probably not by more than a few millimeters.

Two, if you check the actual Simpson's catalog ( http://www.emsplace.com/shaving/simpsons_catalog.aspx ), they don't list lofts at all, only overall brush lengths. The loft measuring is done by each merchant. With different measurers, you are likely to get different measurements, especially since they do not all use the same equipment or technique.

Three, I get the impression that certain vendors can request lofts shorter or longer than standard for a given brush. Obviously, that will create a difference.

Special rulers, eh?

I posting something similar about Simpson Chubbies awhile back. Three different mainstream vendors (SRP, VB and WCS if memory serves) had different lofts listed.

The general consensus was that the brushes were hand made and thus had some minor deviations from brush to brush.

My brushes are also handmade, and I try to get the loft I promise my customers within max +/- 1 mm. So, when I promise a loft of 48 mm, it is in the range of 47 - 48 mm, but more like 47.5 to 48.5 mm. I use small cork slices to shim to the correct loft. However, I put more effort in satisfying my customer's wishes and have no mass production. I think it is poor quality control if brushes of the same model go out with too big differences in the measurements.

Thank you all, gentlemen! Your answers do put things in perspective! Think my best course will be to ask the purveyor for a specific sized loft out of his stock.

Yep, there are a lot of great vendors here a B&B will go out of their way to help if you prefer a longer or shorter loft.
