Question for runners

Where do you put your keys when you run?

I used to hide mine in a plant in front of my building, but I recently moved and that's no longer an option. I tried carrying them in my hand, but I find it distracting. There's a pocket in my running shorts, but there's no fasten on it and I'm terrified they're going to fly out while I'm running and I won't be able to find them.

I take one key only, not the whole ring. With regular shoes you can loop it through the laces before you tie your shoes. With VFFs or other non-laced shoes, are you wearing a hydration pack/waist belt of any kind? Mine has a keyloop on it. Otherwise maybe a safety pin?

Thought about the safety pin. The thing about that is that my fear of the keys flying out would be replaced by a fear of being stabbed by the pin.

I have two keys - one for the apartment and one for the front door.

Not wild about a fanny pack. Not because of the appearance, but it seems like it would be annoying to feel it on me. I'm not carrying a water bottle, though that is an option now that summer is coming up. What I'd like would be some sort of wrist or bicep pack. I have an iPod shuffle, so I just clip it on my shorts, but I've seen people with the big iPods that put them in some sort of arm pouch. Something like that, but as a pack and not an iPod holder would be good.

This is what I do. It can be a hassle but you won't lose the keys. Another option, not advised for everyone. Have a hide spot for you keys, not directly by your house but an area that only you would check.

If your shorts have a draw string, tie it to that and place the key inside the pocket. unnecessary IMO but if you're looking for security...

I might try the key loop thing.

I used to hide it in a plant in front of my building. I now live in Manhattan, on Broadway, it's not really an option, anymore!

Put the key (one on each side if you have two) through your lace before you tie your shoe (as many others have said).

I used to string mine through a dog tag chain, now I just keep it in my shorts pocket and haven't lost one yet.

You live on Broadway? Can't you just leave it with the doorman? :wink2: Kidding..
You're two days late for the "Gokey" on Kickstarter.. their project was funded, though, so maybe they'll start selling it online soon.

Non-doorman building or I would!

Many thanks for all of the suggestions. For right now, I'm going to go with the thread it through the shoelaces technique. Gotta make copies of the keys, first.

If I don't like that, I'll get fancy.

Sometimes I will use the pocket of the shorts. However, I usually run with my phone for music and keep it in a spibelt. It's small, and will carry phone, key, cash, etc. and remain unobtrusive under your shirt.

I just got used to carrying them. My shoes does have a key pocket that will fit one key, but my car key doesn't fit in it and I often run at trails away from my house. Rather than wear something or have them jingle around, I just carry them and really don't mind.
