Question about razor aggressiveness

Hi , am a relative newb so apologies if this is a dumb question , I have only used a couple of de razors so dont yet have the experience to answer this question myself though I have a basic understanding of the factors that make a razor aggressive (blade gap, blade angle, weight of razor).
It seems a common school of thought that mild razors are good for people with fine facial hair and more aggressive razors better for people with more facial hair, I was wondering however if a more aggressive razor can give a better shave on a person with finer facial hair or would the razor just be more aggressive with more chance of nicks and cuts etc with no real benefit ???

i'm more towards the "fine" end of the spectrum, and find that i can get a great shave with just about anything so far (fusion, norelco, schick injector, DE, etc.).

my experience is that a mild razor like a progress set on 1 takes more passes to achieve a uniform BBS result than a more aggressive razor like a schick G, say 4 passes versus 2.5.

the downside to the aggressive razor is in my hands there is a much greater likelihood of getting weepers and/or razor burn, especially on my neck.

so for me it is a tradeoff, and it kind of depends on what mood i'm in as far as weapon of choice.

i'm still experimenting, which is a lot of the fun, and hopefully will find the tool that gives me the result i want with the absolute fewest passes and lowest risk.

It's really something you just have to figure out on your own, for your particular beard. As mentioned, there are pluses and minuses to mild and aggressive razors. It sounds like you've already got some razors. Are you getting good shaves from them? Is so, and you're happy with the razors you have, there's probably not much reason to experiment with others. I like variety, so I've branched out into all different directions. You'll have to be the judge is that's what you want to do or not.

Mild vs. aggressive is really just about preference more than anything else. Both mild and aggressive razors will shave any beard type as well as the other.

+1

Part of the fun of using different razors is that I experience some variety and learn to reinforce using good technique.

Beard type yes - but probably not all skin types. I have had problems with my skin since 20 years. I cannot use a Futur or even a Schick Injector (except for the adjustable on setting 4 max). In recent years I have tried a slant (Merkur 37G) with not so good results and just recently I have had to give up The Gillette Yellow blades in my Feather stainless.

I think you may find your answer in your question. Mild razors at a severe angle can be pretty aggressive, and aggressive razors at a shallow angle can be quite mild. Keep experimenting with the razors you have. My technique seems to evolve over time. After the initial learning curve, I thought the learning would trickle down to where I never made any more adjustments in technique, but it seems there remains much learning to be done. I love DE shaving for that reason (and many others, of course): the challenge of getting a BBS shave is there for me each morning.

Enjoy your shaves!
