Question about Mitchell's Wool Fat Soap containers

How much distance is there between the top of a new puck and the top of the MWF container that it can be bought with? I'm interested in both the wooden bowl and the ceramic one.

I tend to slop a bit over the sides when I put a puck of it into my extant wooden palm bowl, and it's so slick I can't hang onto it (which is a marvelous thing on my face, but I'm plainly no good at juggling). I'm wondering whether I should get the MWF in a container, or just scout for a vintage shave mug of suitable dimension. ideally I'd like around 2" of free space over a new puck.

Many thanks for replies!

Less than an inch with the ceramic bowl. Probably the same with the wooden.

Buy a puck and find a bowl. You must try MWF!

A brand new puck of MWF in the OEM ceramic bowl probably has about a half inch of clearance. My MWF is packed away, so I'm guessing this from memory, without measuring.

If you want 2" of clearance, you can take the new puck and cut a slice from it, enough to put it back in with as much clearance as you want.

Or, you can use a grater and mill half of it back into the bowl, and save the other half for your next refill.

Thanks for the replies! Yes, I've tried it, that's how I know it's as slick as ... well, you know. Sounds like I need to measure the diameter of a puck and look for a mug or bowl conducive to my sloppiness (it isn't intentional, I swear it!)

I do like my little thrift-store wooden palm bowl for lathering after I've loaded the brush with soap or cream. Since I wear a beard and just shave cheeks and neck, completely loading the brush in the soap container wastes fully half of the lather in the brush. I'm not a skinflint, but I dislike wasting that much of something that I like. I may need to invest in a Wee Scot or similar smaller brush.

Gaston,

I grate my MWF into a 'Tupperware' like container; the sealed lid prevents the soap drying out and cracking which frequently happens when MWF is stored in a wooden bowl or the MWF ceramic bowl.

Have fun !

Best regards

Russ

Yep, cracking affects MWF...It does not reduce the power of the almighty thing but it's a little bit unaesthetical on a set brush, razor bowl...:glare:
