Queen Charlotte Fougère ...

I thought I would post some additional thoughts on the fougère scented shaving cream released by Queen Charlotte Shave (QCS) a few weeks ago and to see if any others had additional thoughts about it. In the interest of disclosure, I received a free sample of it from Matthew. Also, I had mentioned the idea to him after there was a thread lamenting the lack of a good fern scented shaving soap after Penhaligon's reformulated their shaving soap and sent him my last puck of tallow English Fern so that he could have it in mind as he went to develop his own fougère scented shaving cream.

The performance is excellent and what I expected from QCS. The consistency is somewhere between a soap and a cream. Although I tend to prefer soaps as I have a perception that they are more economical and last longer, my small sample has lasted for several shaves and it seems like it would be a good value. It lathers very easily and provides a great cushiony shave and is very slick.

The big question for most is probably the scent. My initial reaction has remained pretty consistent: It is close to EF and within a general fougère family, but spicier than EF shaving soap. With that said, however, it also occurred to me that by now, what I have remaining is a few years old and I am sure it has lost some of its intensity. Moreover, on its own, it is a great scent. The scent works great for the shave, followed by a nice lavender aftershave like SMN, and finished with Penhaligon's EF EdC. In that lineup, it works great, nothing clashes, things go well together, and it is very enjoyable on its own. I would opt for it without question over the current Penhaligon's EF shaving soap. In short, if one is looking for a fern scented shaving cream or soap, it is worth a try.

Great review & detail Brian! After having it out of the rotation for a while I used my QCS Esquire Cream last night (for those unfamiliar with the product, it's the consistency of an Italian soft soap). Matt really makes a fantastic product. Super easy to build a conditioning slick lather. I forgot how easy & over-loaded the brush and had enough lather for an 8 pass shave. The Fougere scent sounds intriguing & will have to include it in my next order.

I got a sample of Martin de Candre's fougére body soap and I would love a shaving soap like it. From what I gathered in the other thread about this cream is that is isn't quite the same. Is that still the consensus?

Yes, they are quite different. I wouldn't let that stop you from trying the QCS Fougere. It's very, very good and I agree with Brian's thoughts about it being a spicier version of Pen's EF.

I don't think I have ever tried anything "fern" scented. I think Speick smells spicy. Does it smell like that at all? I don't know why I ask other about scent because I know how subjective it is. Besides, I am probably just gonna order it anyway

There's also a matching ASB that was released a few days ago. I ordered both and love the scent. While I can't comment on its similarity to EF, to me, it's in the same family as Musgo Real and La Toja AS.

The Fougere from QCS was my first fern scented product I had tried. I normally don't like the earthy or "dirty" scents as I call them. But this one hit a home run. Absolutely awesome scent. The fern is a bit mild but everything else paired with it makes it perfect.

Although others have described this as earthy, dirt-like, etc. I cannot see how this scent falls into that category. When I think or earthy scents like vetiver, QCS Celestial Woods or Provence comes to mind, but not Fougere. To me it's almost an older, somewhat dated scent that I would see ore fitting for the older crowd (nothing intended to be disrespectful by that comment, just an observation). Has a powdery, old-school scent to me. Something I think I could picture someone's grandfather liking.

I'm right with you on everything you said. I don't think it's earthy or dirt like at all, as I stated earlier. I've had samples of celestial woods and other things like that, and I just could not stand them.

It does seem older, but I'm only 29. ;) It's probably the most "aged" or "sophisticated" scent I own, as I'm normally a fan of citrus or lightly herbal scents. I typically dislike cologne or powdery scents.

However with that said, I own dozens upon dozens of soaps and creams in every scent. I just don't use the ones I don't love as much as others.

We may have similar taste. I do not like cologne-ish type scents either, and prefer essential oil scented creams/soaps. Celestial Woods would be a hit for me if the scent was stronger, and also really love QCS Esquire, Hanami, Mysore Sandalwood, Lavender, Lime, etc. Provence is a VERY earthy, citrus/herbal very complex scnet that they dont offer anymore apparently.
