I've had incredible experiences with QCS soaps on the one hand, and mediocre experiences on the other hand. I can't tell what consistently results in good lather with these guys. Can anyone offer some tips on lathering with these guys?
I have the Key Lime and just got the Queen Charlotte a couple weeks ago because I enjoyed the scent and performance of the Key Lime. He also sent me a sample of the Vostok I'm looking forward to trying.
I find QCS soaps really easy to lather. In fact when I haven't used it in a while and come back to it is when I realize how much I like them.
I'm not sure what what your water type might be, your brush type, lathering method etc.. but I find it to be one of the easiest sopas to lather consistently.
Maybe give the forum a description of how you're lathering and maybe some tips will come your way!
QCS is currently my #1 soap, and I get great lather every day. Here's what I do:
1) I use a brush with plenty of backbone, like the SOC boar or B&B Essential boar.
2) I soak the brush for about 5 minutes, and also put a teaspoon or two of water onto the puck to soften it up.
3) I squeeze as much water as possible out of the brush after soaking.
4) I dump the leftover water from softening the puck into my lather bowl.
5) I load the brush on the puck for about 45. You might want to go for even longer until you start to get consistent results. Too much product is always better than too little.
6) I start building the lather in my bowl, adding water very slowly. I've found QCS does not need as much water as Mike's or some of the other soaps I've tried.
7) Usually about 3-4 minutes or so in the bowl is enough to produce fantastic lather, but I have very hard water. You may need less time.
Tip: when I build the lather in my bowl, I use a combination of brush movements: swirling in a circle, pumping the brush, and rapid back-and-forth whipping. As lather creeps up the sides of the bowl, I push it back down and keep working the brush.
Here's what my lather looks like using the above technique:
Start with a damp but not soaked brush and load until you are starting to build a lather on top of the puck (about a minute or slightly more for me), transfer to face and work it in dipping the brush tips in water 3-4 times until you get a nice sheen appearing on the lather. Shave and enjoy.
PS- this is my method for just about every soap I use the only difference being the amount of time it takes to load and the amount of time I dip my brush in water.
I'm bummed I'm not going to get to use the unscented i bought in the group buy for awhile. this stuff looks great. I suppose I should attempt to take my can of Mike's with me on my next trip, just to try to whittle it down a bit more.
