Putting some stuff together for my father; I need suggestions!

Greetings everyone! I'm in the process of putting some stuff together for a Father's Day gift for my dear old dad. I'm really excited for this because whenever I talk about wetshaving he always seems excited. Better yet, I'm only 18 and he's in his mid 40s! I've been thinking about getting him some stuff for a while, but this little anecdote helped me decide for sure.

Last night we were at the mall looking at ties (high school graduation on Monday! :thumbup1:) and as we were leaving Macy's, I commented on how I thought it was funny that the men's fragrances are upstairs, yet the men's skincare stuff is right by the exit downstairs. Keep in mind we were about 40 feet away from said skincare products.

Suddenly my eyes locked on a display. I knew those boxes. Blue, yellow, dark red. The telltale vertical stripes. A small white circle making out the barely discernible words "The Art of Shaving."

I said "No way, I didn't know we had Art of Shaving stuff!" Note the nearest supplier of AoS stuff used to be in St. Louis. We promptly went over to check it out and a lady working there immediately hurried over to us and starting asking us if we were familiar with the stuff. I said I was; my father responded in the negative. She said they had just stocked the stuff literally a day before and she had just returned from a "class" educating her about the ins and outs of the products (the class was in St. Louis, unsurprisingly).

After a few minutes of talking (my family is from St. Louis) and browsing the stuff, we each left with a sample pack of their pre-shave oil, cream, and balm. We smelled all of the creams and my dad especially like the lemon. This is what made me decide to go full speed ahead with the Father's Day gift.

I'm hoping to put together a "kit" with cream(s), soap(s), and aftershaves. No DEs yet as he has to shave early in the morning and I'd rather him enjoy the experience of traditional lather first. I have plenty of razors and blades for him to try on weekends, however. I ordered some aftershave samples from a few different places (Saint Charles Shave included). Most of there are for myself but I threw in a few with him in mind and I plan on giving them for him to test so I can get a gauge for what particular kinds of AS he likes.

As far as creams and soaps go, I'm definitely getting the AoS lemon. I might get a tube of Godrej just for variety's sake. For soaps I think I will order some Pre de Provence and I'll probably get some VdH at Walmart.

So far the kit is shaping up to include:

-Tweezerman badger brush (I plan to break it in per ambrose's method before I give it to him)
-AoS Lemon cream
-Godrej cream (possibly)
-Pre de Provence soap
-VdH soap (possibly)
-SCS aftershave splashes (possibly)
-"Drugstore" aftershaves (Aqua Velva, Clubman, Old Spice)
-Some kind of mug or bowl
-Possibly a new cologne

He's never been much of an aftershave guy, but he seems really interested in traditional wetshaving. I know he'll love the stuff, it's just a matter of me getting some good stuff for him.

I would absolutely LOVE input on EVERYTHING that I plan to include in this set. Be it additions, subtractions, suggestions, I'm totally open to anything. I've loved this place since the day I joined so I figured I'd bring this idea of mine here for discussion. Thanks again for being so awesome, guys.

Why stop at the wet shave kit, go ahead and give him the whole enchilada. Get him a good sample pack of blades and pick him out one of your nicer, milder DE's. Give it all to him first thing on Sunday morning, before he shaves. And something to go great with the lemon that he would like is a Trumper's lime. I love it! Has a great lime and is not too strong. My wife loves it too.

Good luck with converting your dad! Get him online, and tell him to join us here. We would love to have him.

Oh, and congratulations on your graduation. Keep up the good work.

Thanks!

In response to your other post, I already plan on letting him try the DEs, I just don't want to make him think that I'm insisting he use them. His birthday is very close after Father's Day so I figured if he decides to go the DE road I can look for a birth year razor for him. Right now he's happy with his Sensor and Mach 3 so I figured I would see how he likes the brush/cream/soap approach first. :thumbup1:

I think you could prolly find an OS mug on ebay or here for a good price. It might bring back some memories from his father or grandfather?

Awesome suggestion! A few months ago I found two OS mugs at a local flea market for a few dollars each. I can check back and if I'm unsuccessful just give him my second one.

or if you want, this might be a little cheezzy, but walmart with put a picture on a mug. I know I use a regular coffee mug for my williams and it works just fine.

Is Thirdeye still offering the custom wooden shave bowl with a monogram? One of those might be a nice touch and the price is right.

Also, I strongly recommend you let him borrow a DE or two. I also have to get up (relatively) early in the morning, so I shave at night. Maybe your father would enjoy getting in a relaxing shave before bed - I sure do. Still being clean-shaven when I wake up in the morning is one of the great benefits of DE. I can relax and take my time now.

I'm doing this for my dad as well. So far I have a 1940s Superspeed razor for him. This is the same one that I use and I like it a lot, and he is fond of the twist to open razors as that's what his dad shaved with. On top of that, the 40s is the highest quality superspeed. Next up I got a 100 pack of no name Israeli blades. They're cheap and efficient, and they shave well too. For a brush I was considering going with the Simpson Wee Scot, although this one is still up in the air. For cream I'll probably get a tube of C.O. Bigelow, and for soap I'll get VdH, Mama Bear's, or Ogallala. All are inexpensive and work well. My dad isn't really a cologne man so I'll probably finish it off with Nivea Sensitive ASB.

Good luck, I'm sure he'll enjoy it :thumbup1:

Well I finally got everything for the setup. Here's a breakdown of what it includes:

Brush
-Tweezerman badger brush broken in per ambrose's method

Soaps
-VDH Deluxe. The small bowl in front of it is going to be used to melt the soap into.
-Pre de Provence. I ordered a puck of this for myself too. I couldn't resist.

Creams
-Speick. I haven't tried this myself, but it seems to be regarded as a good cream!
-AoS Lemon. We were at Macy's a while back (explained in greater detail in my thread) and he really liked the scent.

Aftershaves
-Clubman
-Gillette Cool Wave. He used to have a small bottle of this stuff when I was a little guy. I associate this scent with him.
-Aqua Velva. Only glass bottle I could find for miles!
-Ogallala Bay Rum and Sandalwood. Another product I haven't tried. Hope he likes it!
-Nivea Q10 balm. I figured I'd give him a balm to try too!

Miscellaneous
-Latte mug from Bed, Bath, and Beyond for lathering
-Styptic pencil!

Colognes
-Safari for Men by Ralph Lauren
-Zirh Classic
